So I am on Bumble. A photo comes up. Of a girl. Wearing a mask.

On Bumble. She put a profile photo of herself. Wearing a mask.

I mean what the literal fk?

Swipe left!!!

I watched a show on my hotel TV on channel 5 I think it was.

All 3 presenters were in some hill tribe village and wearing masks. One of the presenters was a hill tribe villager. One of the two main presenters even wore 2 masks.

It sure looked cringeworthy.

  • It has always been customary in Asia to wear a mask if suffering from a cold, and also common to use them during times of air pollution. Well before COVID.

It comes from respect for others, something visiting foreigners could learn from.

  • This is not new, they wore them well before covid manly for the air pollution issues

Masks are cringeworthy. It basically says "I am opting out of normal society because I am a very precious flower and more valuable than you filthy germ carrying parasites".

I need to protect my specialness against the vile germs the rest of you spit around.

Except if you wear it against pollution, that's different and I completely understand that.

No ONE should be forcing anyone to be wearing a mask in ANY setting at this point. The mask mandate was lifted on June 23, 2022, almost 3 years ago now, so whether it's a government building a hospital or whoever, it's time to let this superstition go. The government lifted the mandate in 2022 so there can't possibly be a requirement anywhere left when they were the ones who lifted it.

Don't force unwilling locals or foreigners to participate in this madness.

Now I haven't encountered it myself since late 2023 when unbelievably, one Japanese manufacturing company in Samut Prakan was still demanding visitors submit Covid test results and all employees and visitors wear masks.

Even if I see an old mask sign up, I ignore it and there's no issue. That particular company was the one and only exception, which was still demanding masks I've seen since early 2023, although I am aware of some schools still requiring them as recently as 2024 or even more recently for students undertaking certain exams.

On reading a few of your reply to other posts, all I can say is that you are truly a legend in your own lunch hour.

I had radiotherapy middle of last year for throat cancer. It seems to have done the job but my throat is still recovering and the misses worries about the Bangkok air pollution so wearing one keeps her happy and might save me a problem.

@saintdomingo

You are perfectly entitled to wear a mask if you think it helps you... though ironically in some places that  mandated masks during the covidiocy ,they have reverted back to longstanding policy of no mask ie : banks

They also again kinda don't like face masks at protest rallies anymore.

for pollution you need a N95 or better mask  😷

Remember the flack Michael  Jackson got for his clean room bubble..one of the reasons he was labeled “wako jacko“

Why would every staff member of makro still have to wear one? It’s f horrible to breath your expelled air in over and over and has been shown to cause harm , it’s because they are sheeple and can never question authority, like most Thais do their whole lives…

Spot on.

You know, every single Makro staff member takes off the mask as soon as they leave Makro.

It has nothing to do with their health, 100% compliance only.

it's worse than cringeworthy... I'm usually good with expressing my feelings but damn, I still can't find words to express how stupid and disgusting it is after all the "covid-19" BS

I don't understand why this myth is still pushed.

You can also see literally hundreds of videos on YouTube showing that very few people wore masks prior to covid.

Yes some did but it wasn't even a couple percent of the population. To say that mask wearing was popular is just not true.

Quite telling that there is no reply from the “health professional” caught pushing mis/disinformation.   It’s shameful.

The myth will continue.   Amazing how dishonest people are.

The only people I knew wearing masks in my 14 years here were women who just had a nose job.  Lived in Chiang Mai for almost 5 years.   Not one Thai that I knew ever wore one….even during the burning season.

I think there is an element of pollution protection, but many Thais will put masks on before entering a building, having not worn one outside.  You can still see them lifting up masks when they see foreigners also.

There's definitely still an element of covid protection.  It seems that covid (or airborne viruses in general) is kind of a permanent thing for some Thais.

Possibly there's some snobbery/xenophobia around it also for a few people.  "Us good clean Thais need to wear masks around these dirty foreigners."

Things have definitely improved after covid, though.  Thailand was a couple of years behind the rest of the world, but they've softened towards foreigners a fair amount.  I don't know if it will ever go back to how it was before, though.

It won't - permanent psychological damage has been caused to them. They are too weak, stupid and cowardly to ever move on.

I notice things much more than your average person; clearly, Thailand is number one in mask wearing worldwide although Japan and Taiwan come very close.

Anyone with an IQ above 50 realizes that many people Thailand are enslaved to covid paranoia and will never let go of their pathetic muzzles

Having lived in Bangkok since the late 1980s I can assure you that, prior to Covid, virtually no-one wore masks at any time. Seasonal mask wearing because of air pollution only started once people had access to smartphone apps warning about PM2.5 levels and even then, it was a very small minority that wore masks.

It is false to suggest otherwise. This is an image from 2016. Not a mask in sight.

Not true, masks were often worn when ill, and for pollution for at least 20 years prior to Covid. Apps did help and more people were able to work out when best to wear them.

These days, people are more educated on airborne illnesses and pollution, so more people wear them. Many live in multi generational houses and can't afford to be ill. That's evolution.

Thanks for the breaking news. Maybe you can help track down the people in the photo from 2016 I also posted and tell them. Next!

Wow a single photo! It must be true! I'll disregard testimony from *literally every Thai in Thailand* then. Thanks!
