Its a good idea to bring your old passport with you for your next outside borders trip.

Why

Well the last time I switched US passports I was asked for the old one at Thai immigration. I believe it was because my new passport was clean except for a Extension of stay in Cambodia, and showed no ins and outs.

Whatever, they took both passports, typed for a while, stamped my new one in and gave them back.

It costs nothing to carry the old one one more time.

The OP is living in Thailand on annual extensions from Non O.

After he attends immigration for transfer of visa information and any relevant stamps ...eg a reentry permit then for future travel he does not need to travel with both passports.

Thats fine, I take the position in life that preparation is the key.

It cost me nothing and took up no space to take my old passport along to avoid any potential hassles or questions from a stressed or ignorant or confused or racist IOs at the border.

I offered my suggestion as a help to the OP or anyone else in the same situation. People can do as they chose. My experience has been over the years that it avoids hassle, as about 17 years ago, I was also ASKED if I had my old passport with me (and I did) at Swampy. They didnt look at it though.

Of course they questioned it, you are supposed to update the new passport - it's not rocket science to think that one thru.

If you are close to your IO I would suggest giving them a visit to find out exactly what they require, we all know requirements differ greatly between IO’s.

I renewed my passport recently and visited my IO to enquire as had heard about bank book and 12 months statement ( i think was mentioned somewhere ).

To my surprise they wanted photocopies of all stamped pages of old passport and photo page of new, together with application form only so did it there and then, took about 15 minutes.

This was Ayutthaya but just an example of how the requirements may differ.

I ended up getting a EMERGENCY PASSPORT because 6 weeks was not "long" enough time to process a 10 year passport.

Transferring stamps from the emergency passport to 10 year passport took 10 minutes ( resetting the dates on the IO stamps ) with NO additional paperwork at my IO.

Every office has their OWN REQUIREMENTS and POLICY on ALL paperwork for everything.

It's best practice to find out FROM YOUR LOCAL IO their POLICY.

Here in Chiangmai they've wanted a complete photocopy of all pages of one's old passport (every page that has any stamp on it regardless of origin). I don't remember if I signed every one of those pages but probably did.

You should keep your old passport  no need to do anything

The uk.pasport office will cut a corner of your old passport to signify it's no longer valid.

That would be very unusual.

Which immigration office.

For transfer process the information relating to original visa is entered into new passport along with any required stamps such as reentry permit.

For some folk the passport with original visa (sticker) is perhaps few passports ago.

Rayong, old passport visa info entered onto first page of new passport, but still require original visa

When I transferred my son's Extension to his new passport (Chaengwattana), they needed a photocopy of his original O visa issued in London in 2016 (2 passports ago!) and my entry to Thailand stamp from 2019.  Luckily I had brought everything with me.

Strange as I certainly did not provide that when I did transfer of stamps at CW in 2024.

See attached list of docs from CW transfer form.

"Copy of visa stamp in pp if available"

Not my experience when I transferred stamps from old to new passports there a couple of years ago! Just old & new passports (+ copies of relevant pages) and a completed version of the form linked by @DrJack54 and @Upnotover above.

Scary - bureaucracy creeping up new heights ...........

Assuming that it's Thai bureaucracy you're referring to, this pales into insignificance IMHO when compared to the cumbersome bureaucratic nonsense we Brits here in LOS are subject to at passport renewal time!
