Georgealbert Posted April 19 Posted April 19 Picture from responders. A 15-year-old boy suffered a horrific workplace injury when his right hand was dragged into a meat grinder at a butcher’s shop in Phuket, leaving his fingers severely crushed. Emergency responders spent nearly an hour carefully freeing the teenager before rushing him to hospital. The shocking incident occurred on the afternoon of 18 April in Rassada subdistrict, Mueang district, Phuket. According to reports, the boy, referred to only as “Ae” , was operating a meat grinder when his hand was pulled into the machine while he was processing meat. Volunteers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation responded swiftly to the distress call. They arrived at the scene with hydraulic cutting tools alongside an advanced EMS unit from Vachira Phuket Hospital. They found the teenager conscious but in visible pain, with his right hand trapped inside the grinder. Rescue workers spent almost an hour prying apart the heavy machinery to safely extract the boy’s hand. Upon removal, it was discovered that his thumb, fingers and parts of his hand were badly mutilated. He was immediately transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Witnesses say the boy was operating the grinder when his hand was accidentally drawn into the machine. A co-worker quickly shut off the device and called for emergency help. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident and whether any labour laws were violated. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Khoasod. -- 2025-04-20 5

Sticking your hand into revolving parts of a meat grinder is not an accident. It's stupidity 3 1

bunnydrops Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Unfortunately, being young is a learning experience. How many times were you told not to touch a hot stove? How many haven't? 1

I know of an example in the UK were a lady lost her hand and forearm up to her elbow in a butchers on the same type of machine (mincer / grinder). The machines are supposed to have a guard on them to prevent getting the hand-inside anywhere near the 'auger - corkscrew' part. In both cases, this guard was obvious removed as it was 'getting in the way'.... Must have been horrific for the boy - I very much doubt much of his hand will ever be usable again.
Magictoad Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Accidents happen. Young people get injured too not just adults. 16 YO is the minimum age to work in the UK. Nobody needs a "Special permit". We need money to buy food to put on our family's table. All the more so in Thailand I should think.
