Which - given that California has 40M people and Japan 123M - is astonishing.

Japan still suffering the effects of 30 years of economic doldrums from which it does seem to be slowly emerging, though still struggling with aging population effects.

As for California one might conceive of a day when the Far West secedes from Trump's Middle America ...

Yes, sad for Friends of Usofa - Oz & Japan & Taiwan & most of the Europeans.

It's because Japan is in decline. They may have 120 million people but 100 million of them are like 100 years old. California isn't going up so much as Japan is going down. Germany will probably been best to sink to that level.

Sadly, you may well be right. The golden age for 'Westerners' & their friends is over, everywhere. We need to get used to the rise of China and its bullying tactics - ruthless even by Usofan standards.

That must be in spite of Newsom.  Imagine how much better it would be with an adult in charge.

Still in debt, and still can't balance the state budget.  With homeless citizens living and crapping on the streets.  Sooner or later you run out of other peoples money, as the big earners, and companies say bye bye California :cheesy:

CA debt is more than many countries yearly budget :coffee1:

As I recall, they were running a budget surplus before Newsom.

Meanwhile, the Cali Dems are pushing a bill that would decriminalize welfare fraud up to $25K.  Seems like their short memories don't remember what happened when they decriminalized shoplifting up to $950.  What could possibly go wrong?

Senate Bill 560.  In fairness, they're only decriminalizing welfare overpayments stemming from administrative errors or minor infractions.  Minor infractions like reporting more kids than they have or lying about whether they're living with a wage earner.  Sounds like they'll be seeing a lot more fraud and fibbery up to $24,999.

Mind boggling.

Can't wait till murder is a misdemeanor :cheesy:

As a 50 year resident of CA just imagine if at least two of these negative things were resolved.  It was golden back in the late 1980's and most of the 1990's.  Both SF and LA survived two major earthquakes and thrived but now I have doubts. The state and the largest city both have large budget deficits.  LA Mayor Bass recently announced over 1600 city employees will be layed off and a hiring freeze will be implemented except for Fire and Police.  A city has to be in despersate situation to lay off employees.  In the past a job wtih LA was like a lifetime gig.
