Tax-Free Wine Boom in Thailand Spurs Costs and Controversy

Featured Replies

Price has barely dropped though, so it's not being passed on.

Secondly, these stimulus idea from the previous PM Sretta, including removing visa fees that were being collected from Chinese and Indian visitors especially, was a big massive loss of income.

Wine should not be a luxury.

  • This is mid-ranged? If there's a 300% increase in sales then this doesn't reflect a general market. This is the high end of the market. Anyone on here bought a Bt5000 bottle of wine lately?

Good wine starts at 3-4 euro a bottle (75 cl)

my family always made our own wine ..  usually 4 barrels each year

my brother and I ..    the last of the lot made out last batchs in 2019

A Sangiovese   and  our classic Italian red,, comprised of Alicante grapes with a Muscat kicker   all fermented and aged in bourbon barrels

Crates of grapes delivered to my house  where we would crush, press and store,  then after approx 9 months we would bottle,label/foil would end up at about a $3.00 cost and stored properly

Unlike every place that sells wine here standing up on the shelf..

That's the equivalent of around 53 baht a bottle. I've just paid 10 times that for a bottle of Evian at a posh restaurant. Does it rot through the container before you get it home? Seriously though, well done.

costco in usa sells red or white wine box with 3 litres of wine for about $15 usd or 495 baht....so that is 4 bottles worth at less than $4 per bottle....i am no wine expert but for basic wine it tastes just fine to me...a lot of people must also agree as they sell millions of boxes every year and their boxed wines seem to do just fine in all the  wine taste tests ...sure wish i could get that deal in Thailand....

Depends on where you are in the world, no? On the Mediterranean coast it's about 1 euro per litre 😉

I'm currently in the south of Spain and I'm paying €2.50 to €3.50 for a bottle of decent Rioja.
