Wow. Where to begin?

dramatic increase in Vietnamese sex workers, now surpassing Thai nationals in Bangkok's infamous sex trade

This is so patently absurd that, as Trink used to say, "any comment would be superfluous"...!

This shift is largely linked to Thailand's inviting tourist visa policies

A long-standing bilateral agreement allows Vietnamese to enter Thailand without a visa for 30 days.  There have been no changes to this policy in recent memory.

Sounds an awful lot like someone who doesn't like the competition 🤔

most foreign women arrive on standard tourist visas valid for three to five months

Ah, yes, the famous 3-5 month "standard tourist visas" - perhaps people shouldn't comment on matters about which they clearly know nothing! And by the way, stop by the Thai consulate in Saigon and see how many Vietnamese are applying for tourist visas. Hint: there aren't any, because they all enter visa-free.

a Crime Suppression Division spokesperson confessed it was the first documented evidence of Vietnamese women working the streets

Clearly he doesn't read ASEAN Now. From March 15:

"Thai police launched a nighttime operation in Soi Nana, part of Bangkok's bustling Sukhumvit area, leading to the arrest of 13 foreign women suspected of engaging in sex work.

"Among the detainees were women from Tanzania, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam."

"Airing their findings, Channel 7 included a scene where a concerned citizen implored the police to take action, stating, “the alley is already full.”

"The alley is already full" said the Thai lady of the night. This illegal  job is reserved for Thais. Where is the job protection, as one may reasonably ask. May I suggest a 46% tariff on Vietnam imports.

Gonna be some serious catfights out on the stroll, don't need a fortune teller to see that.

In what language are VN gals conversing with punters?  Thai guys seem to have thing for light skin girls, they might do well.

Thai working gals have told me about work vacations in other SEA counties hoping to come home with a big score.  Maybe the VN girls are new to the circuit.

So quality reporting from Channel 7 then.

More Vietnamese hookers in Thailand than Thai hookers.

Sure, sure...more  Bahn Mi than Boat noodles as well...makes perfect sense.

It does. Thailand's prosperity has reduced the need  of impoverished Thais to work as  street level prostitutes.  That's the bottom of the tier in the sex trade.

BS. Thais always want you to believe either there is no prostitution, or it's not them involved.

Tbh from the last time I walked through the Na Na area , I’d say this is welcome. The amount of chunk many of these Thai girls have on them nowadays  is a huge change from even 5 years ago . Standing around in bloomin slippers asking “where you go’ , at least make a bloody effort girls.

They will not trick me to stay longer in Thailand with fake good news 😑

I already spend half of my time in Vietnam where everything concerning girls is better. Light skin not dark brown the type of Isaan, they actually speak English, better service, lower prices.  What is not to like about them?

They are online these days so no need to stand around. Plus they earn a lot more money

Any specific bars/areas that should be avoided?

My question too.  For public safety the article should be specific about areas and bars VN prostitutes are operating, so we can avoid falling prey to their siren calls.

Yes. The Thai deaf girls are still across the street from Nana Plaza. If you walk down the same side of the street, beware, the Viets and Uzbeks are all lined up from Maison Alley across from the Ladyboy 7-11 down to across from the Novatel. The african girls hang out at the Novatel. Hope that keeps you safe.

So YOU'VE Been on a Viewing Mission I See ??

The article says prostitution is illegal in Thailand but is not really true.  The 1996 Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act only makes prostitution illegal in certain circumstances.

  • Soliciting in public so as to cause a nuisance is prohibited.

  • Operating or managing a prostitution business is illegal.

  • Profiting from the prostitution of others (e.g., pimping, brothel-keeping) is a criminal offense.

The VN hookers may well be bothering people in the street which is clearly illegal but It is a hassle for cops to get good enough for that. Passers by will not give evidence.  So the cops have to do it.  In the past to prove the girls (East Europeans in those days) were really soliciting for sexual services, cops actually had sex with them, arested the girls when they had finished and knotted up the used condoms to present as evidence. (I think there was a queue of cops at Lumpini police station volunteering for this dangerous mission confronting violent criminals.)   There was a big outcry from Thai  women's groups arguing the cops had created the crimes themselves  as agents provocateurs.  There was also an outcry from the wives of the arresting officers who were named in the media.  Ha ha.  So the cops were forced to abandon these fun crime busting missions.

Nowadays, if they take action against foreign hookers at all, it is most likely to be for visa violations.

The cops don't like to admit prostitution is not really illegal in any meaningful sense the same way as they pretend smoking weed in public is specifically illegal.  It is not but smoking anything in public is illegal under the Public Health Act, if it causes a nuisance and someone complains.  So it is actually a fairly similar concept of illegality that makes it hard to get convictions.  So cops don't usually try in either case.

So numerous Vietnamese women with many ending up on the game somehow equates to outnumbering Thais on the game in BKK. Total BS.

There was no prostitution in Thailand until the Vietnamese arrived recently... 🤣

This dynamic shift in Bangkok's sex trade calls for a reevaluation of visa policies and stronger enforcement of existing laws to effectively manage the city’s thriving red-light activities.

So, the cops can't control illegal prostitution, so, most likely, all tourists will have their visa-free entry cut by half... "Smart" move! 😆

I remember visiting Pnom Penh many years ago and hundreds of VN hookers had moved in the years following Wun Sen's takeover at the head of a VN army.

I remember.  25 years ago, Phnom Penh bargirls and hookers were all Vietnamese.

I think you'll find 89% of Thai bank accounts have less than 50000 baht in them. Thailand has no more overcome poverty than the US.'

Most prostitutes in Thailand are Thai. Channel 7 nationalist nonsense notwithstanding.
