You forget thailand has a lot transit arrivals not actual tourists. Also many backpackers stay 1-2 months in vietnam nowadays, most tourists here do not.

No I did not forget. Transit arrivals are not  processed as tourists unless they pass immigration.  Let's look at the Vietnam  data in more detail. Vietnam had 17.58 million foreign tourists in 2024. 2.5 million arrived by road, i.e. short time, and day trippers similar to the traffic from Malaysia into Thailand.   Yes, visitors on average stay 11 nights in Vietnam while visitors to Thailand stay an average of 8 nights. However, Thailand still retains a much higher volume of  "luxury" class visitors. Vietnam  does not have the volume of resorts or hotels.  It will one day, but just not now.   Thailand  is not keen on the  backpacker segment and is priced accordingly. Vietnam is still cheap in some regions.

Most of Vietnam's tourists are Asian and their  "wants" are very very different from western  tourists. The Asians want culture, food, shopping, sightseeing, some  outdoor activity and do not sit on beaches. Westerners come for the beach, sun, and for many  the sex tourism.  In Thailand, higher end westerners come for golf and they are  evident in Phuket and Hua Hin, but much of the foreign golf visitors are Asian, especially Japanese and Korean.  Golf tourism is  just starting in Vietnam.

It's about as miserable as it gets out there right now, Han.

And the tourists are going elsewhere.

Wow Bob, first the Thai people avoid you and now the tourists go home when they see you?

You"re a very sad case.

Going on a temple bus 'crawl' with your girlfriend, visiting 10 or more temples in one day with ear-splitting karaoke playing all day on the bus.

Or a karaoke raft towed out into the middle of the lake and left there, with no escape, until towed back in the evening.

The Pattaya Expats Club

I offered to show up and give a talk there once. But unknown to me one of the committee was in a vaguely similar business to me and didn't want me there!

The golf thing is spot on. My condo has about 20 sets of golf clubs in the lobby at all times! And it is not a big building, only about 200 units.

My temple visiting days are over, but some modern Thai temples are a bit interesting. Thai ruins are a bore. Better to go to Myanmar, Cambodia. Not even close.

I joined in Pattaya Expats club (life membership 800 baht) early 2006 when they used to have a Sunday morning meeting at a large hotel - can't remember the name - opposite/ just down from the Twin Palms resort on 2nd Road (between Pattaya Klang and Pattaya Nua). They had a good buffet breakfast and the best talks - on the subject of visas - were provided by Darrel (R.I.P.). The other talks were totally forgettable. When they moved the meetings from that hotel, I lost track. I joined their forum a couple of years ago, but there is too much badmouthing and verbal abuse on there, so I left; basically, a lot of major saddos.

Just remembered the hotel: Grand Sole.

How are people saying Chiang Mai is boring? It's the second biggest city in the country and a massive sprawling landscape packed with endless business including a number of large malls. Outside there's lots of places to travel in the mountains too. Sure it's not Bangkok and doesn't have the bar scene of some tourist cities but that's just a fraction of the ways to entrain yourself.
