Why are retirees so grumpy?

Generally I'm happy and content with my life in Thailand, my much younger wife, my teen son and my home.

Nope. Just read all the negative stuff. Arguing non stop. Pretty dumb to blame it on one person. One guy got 50 thumbs down- says it all. Lots of sad farangs in Thailand it seems.

If you're living in an area you're comfortable in, you shouldn't be too grumpy, although most every person that reaches 60+ has seen their share of life's insanity, and that makes you at least a little  grumpy, If you've been taken advantage of by others, were given diseases you didn't deserve, like depression and others, and live in a place you aren't comfortable because of taking care of others, your grumpiness increases. There is no paradise but there is a lot of nice places where you can fit in well.

We're not "grumpy" .. just too many youngsters running around that get upset at the slightest mention of them being entitled, participation trophy laden, under educated brats.

Okay (I agree this is just baiting). Anyway, why are (some) retirees here so grumpy? Well, my own guess is those ones are living in places with not much to do everyday - you, know, like you OP - places like the north of Thailand, where the hills are nice to look at in Chiang Mai province, but the city itself sucks - it's boring, with its endless pollution, stupid one-way main road - and a brick wall in the centre of town which is supposed to be its main tourist attraction and high point. And that's just CM city, what about all those others in places in rural areas and smaller towns like Pai, etc. Anyone retired in a village better have a really happy, harmonious, non-alcoholic relationship with his/her spouse and in-laws, if not it would be torture. They're trapped, sitting in a corner of the house 'they bought' and all they have to do is bang away sh!tty baiting posts on an obscure web board every day for amusement.  Howz that for grumpy?

It is a nice photo. Now tell us about the water quality and whether it is filled with parasites and pollutants. How bad are the mosquitos  and other insects that transmit dengue and malaria. How close is it to emergency medical care? Outside the golden hour and one is doomed. Is it in convenient  distance to allow a quick visit to a corner store, and for general shopping?

Is it close to service providers? I would not like having my vehicle need repairs out in the middle of nowhere.  Is an airport convenient? Is one able to access quality restaurants etc.

You see, we all have a different perception of paradise. I do like my comforts. My days of living in the forest and drinking ground water, and dealing with biting insects are long over, and I do not miss them.

If it had Bass, Pike, Walleye and Trout it would make living here more enjoyable. None of those here, and most of the lakes are netted out so the only good fishing is in private lakes or pay to fish.

It's 10Km from my house, and I cycle there every morning it's sunny.

No mosquitos, the lake is full of fish that jump a lot.

6Km from the nearest major modern hospital (San Sai)

5Km from MaeJo University and the nearest KFC.

4Km from MaeJo golf course.

 

And here's the public park and lake by the golf course, with running track around, coffee shop, and assorted food stalls.

Yes and by 10 or 11 , the heat of the sun is already pounding down and don't forget the humidity !

You don't have to go in the water because you're already swimming in your sweaty shirt and pants.

And in january to may , you can't see the other side of the little lake.

Many rarely leave their air conditioned homes or stay out very long because of the oppressive heat and rain in rainy season.  I have a small reservoir across the street from my country home mostly devoid of fish (netted continually), and after rain, the area is inundated with flying bugs of all kinds, especially those that drop their wings everywhere when they die, and of course any waterway that sits still has mosquitoes.

 

It's not easy to enjoy the outdoors when there is only two seasons, hot and rainy. The best places have 4 seasons,and a cold season kills bugs and makes it enjoyable to be outside.

 

Not much compares to Fall in the northeast USA. Even in Texas, although it's hotter on average than here, it gets cold during the Fall and Winter, a break in the heat. Living on a lake has nice scenery, but in the tropics, it means bugs.
