Carrying a cough syrup into Thailand

Featured Replies

I'm fly back to Swampy next week, I have 2 bottles of Rikodeine cough syrup that I'd like to bring with me in case I catch covid or flu after returning. Rikodeine cough syrup is available over the counter at pharmacies in Australia, a doctor's prescription is not required. I've found it to be the best treatment for cold/flu with bad coughs, it gives instant relief from persistent coughs, especially at night as it helps one get a good sleep. As I said I'm concerned about the risk of catching covid after returning, however is it illegal to carry this cough syrup with me to Thailand?

I think codeine is a controlled substance in Thailand, but I could be wrong. Does it have codeine? Even so, if it is a controled drug, , you might get away with 2 small bottles.

Ditch that western voodoo stuff and get you some Leopard Brand Brown Mixture.  Available even in 7/11s.

But first (of course) consult your physician.

Well I'm not sure if it actually contains codeine. I have 2 small bottles, one is 100ml, and the other 200ml. This is what it says online:

Rikodeine is a medication for dry cough, designed to alleviate common throat symptoms. It contains Dihydrocodeine, a compound known for reducing throat pain, providing relief from discomfort such as throat irritation due to colds. Its effectiveness begins shortly after ingestion.

Active Ingredients: Dihydrocodeine tartrate 19mg and sorbitol 4.4g

Unless you need it on the flight over, I'd leave it at home and buy what you need OTC here in Thailand.

Not that I have ever had a problem bringing some tightly controlled meds to Thailand (perfectly legally- I have BKK scripts for them,  but they've never asked)  I've never been pulled aside in probably 50-75 entries.

But leave it home just so you don't have to worry.  Then stop by a 7/11 and get some Brown Mixture (contains opium tincture) or go to a genuine pharmacy and ask for a codeine based cough medicine.  There's even a Boots Pharmacy in Suvarnabhumi if you ever need something urgently when you arrive.

And once you're on the ground (especially tourist areas), it's hard to swing a dead cat without hitting a pharmacy that can set you up.

Yes, it is illegal.
