Whats the point of the morning and afternoon alcohol law?

Our local "wholesaler" is open 9AM - 6PM with no apparent restrictions on quantity.

 

They do sell a small selection of non-alcohol goods, but I'm not really sure under what laws they operate. This is Thailand after all

2-5 PM is when the majority of work gets done.

 

In the "Hub of Lack of Advance Planning", few workers have the forethought to bring beer to work with them.

I think you've got it bass ackwards. Alcohol sales are permitted during the lunch period, 11am - 2pm. I've read that the 2pm cutoff was so that the workers would come back from the pub (cannot provide source). I can understand that because when I was working we had to be back before 2pm otherwise the boss would have to come looking for us at the local and drag us back by the scruff of our necks.

 

As for it affecting tourists, that's a bit of a stretch. Tourists can find alcohol just as easily as locals during the 2pm-5pm blackout. I've only not been able to find a beer in weird places like Si Racha where many restaurants refused to serve us between 2pm and 5pm. No idea why, maybe the local BiB want too much tea money or the venues are all holier-than-thou.

 

The only tourists it affects are the kind that want to buy a large Chang in the afternoon and walk around the streets swigging from the bottle. Not that there's anything wrong with that I used to do it myself when I was here as a tourist. Not large bottles though, small cans of Singha Draft. I'm a sophisticated bogan.

i vaguely remember there was something similar in the UK when I was a youngster. It was prohibited to buy alcohol at certain times from what were called "Off Licences". Even our local pub had a separate door to a small room with a counter where they sold alcohol to be consumed off the premises.

Students would never figure out, to ask someone 20 yrs old to buy it for them.  I drank a lot of beer, wine & spirits from state controlled vendors, but never bought it.  

 

Getting beer from local bar or other bar, known to serve minors was never a problem.

Give it a rest ... Drunkard is a bit strong.   Besides, too poor to become a drunkard.  Need to prioritize ones finances, even at early teens age.

 

Just enjoyed some wine & a doobie at lunch & beyond.  Maybe a 6 pack and a doobie, after school some days.

Avoid the 7-Eleven stores, you'll find lots of Thai stores who sell beer anytime of the day.

Its very handy not only for beer.

All my vehicles have a an anderseron plug hard wired to the battery so I can move it easily between them.

Dmax project will have one permenant mounted in place on the console between the seats.

The law applies to selling to the general public, licensed business can buy from wholesalers at anytime

I currently live in a neighbouring country; anyone, at any time can buy any alcoholic beverage (no age, or day-time restriction whatsoever), but no, no kids, or teenagers queueing up to buy booze, or get drunk here, which tells me that this regulation in Thailand is just plain stupid...
