About those jobs that "Americans won't do"....

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

According to NBC news, there was a major ICE raid at a meat packing plant in Omaha Nebraska. About half the workers were found to be in the US illegally, using forged or stolen documents like SSN numbers, etc.   All were taken into custody.

And then?

Within a day, the place was FULL of people applying for jobs.

It is a simple fact that a shortage of labour is good for workers. They can get better pay, better conditions, etc.  And there are enough legal residents in the US to do what needs doing.

Of course. Lots of juicy details were left out. Like separating legal from illegal residents, discussing how the E-Verify system is such a mess, etc.  But the bottom line is that the jobs will be filled.  As will virtually any job done by an illegal immigrant.

What makes you think they aren't American, or at the least legal residents?  That is a tinge racist, don't you think?

In general, about a quarter of the workforce in meat packing are illegals. This particular plant had an overabundance, perhaps that is why it was picked for attention by ICE.

An interesting article, but to your point that Americans rushed to fill the vacancies? That's not necessarily true, is it.

What makes you think they are American, as you wrote in the title, despite being mentioned in the article that they are mainly Spanish speakers?

TH is not different, go into to chicken processing plant in Nakon Nowhere or a fish canning operation in Samut Sakhon - it's all immigrants willing to work in those <deleted>tt conditions.

Chances are they knew the conditions prior to applying- most jobs are transparent about that. And if not, then the place has to start paying its workers better. What's wrong with that? I thought the point was to have well-paying jobs for the good of the economy, not virtual indentured servitude....

There are millions of American citizens who speak Spanish. Or do you think they are all "wetbacks"?  Plus, as I said, at the least they will be legal residents, which is the same thing as far as the labour market is concerned.

If that is your only point you might be right.

But the stated priority aim of the administration's increased enforcement efforts was to eliminate criminals, especially violent criminals, (boogey men of all kinds) clearly that wasn't the case here.

These seem to have been long term residents without any criminal history.

Your guessing.   Nothing wrong g with paying a higher wage IF it happens but chances are it won't. Inflation is created  in this manner and you'll pay at  the checkout. Higher wages and inflation are a double edged sword going hand in hand.   Look how much food cost has escalated in the last year.

Me too. I am amazed at how so many people on this forum have such a low opinion of American workers. Also a low opinion of migrants, assuming that the only thing they can do is the scut jobs that "real" Americans are too good for.

I don't necessarily disagree but I believe many of the places that offer low paying jobs have little room to maneuver wrt salaries, unless they wanna chance raising their prices and maybe/probably lose some of their costumers.

That's where the discussion on minimum salaries come in. If all employers were forced to raise their prices then all of them would (presumably) be forced to raise their prices.

I did some consulting for a plant in Tennessee that was raided and lost over 80% of the workforce. Starting pay almost doubled in four months.

Looks like a lot of identity theft was going on. It is one of the ways that people avoid E-Verify- they use fake and/or stolen personal information like Social Security numbers. And that is.... a crime.  And a violation of federal law.  If they are driving they are driving illegallly, possibly uninsured, and definitely a hazard to others.  If they are knowingly harboring an illegal alien, that is a crime too.

It's you who made a claim about "Americans". There is no clue that they are American.

To sum it up, 'Spanish speakers" did apply for a job  and you have no evidence that they actually were American. That was a baseless claim!

So American labour laws are so weak that employers can get away with paying workers a pittance? No wonder so many Americans need two jobs (or more) just to get by.

What a great system.

If they speak Spanish there is a chance they are Central or South Americans. So still "Americans"

We all know what you mean but people from the US are not the only "Americans"

Disingenuous. Trump was definitely implying that the nation had been invaded by terrorists and violent criminals and that he was gonna do sumpin' about it by gum.

You are just speculating about the crimes you suggest they were guilty of but its seems clear that no terrorists or violent criminals were among those detained.

Did you?

Tuesday's raid purged roughly half of his staff......

.....About a third of the remaining staff at Glenn Valley Foods showed up to work on Wednesday, with many staying home because they still felt afraid or traumatized, resulting in a roughly 20% drop in production that day, according to Hartmann.

Let's do the maff, rayciss tho it be'z.

Lost about half the staff, originally 140, leaving 65 workers.

Only a third showed up on Wednesday.......so about 20-25 workers.

Production dropped 20%.

Maintaining 80% production with only 18% of the workers?

Winning!

So, illegals are going to apply for jobs at a place that ICE raids, and the company is going to hire more illegals.

the left thinks everyone is as smart as they are.

Meat packing is really bad work. At least it's cool.

What a great system.

There is a minimum wage law in the United States.

It was a sheet metal fabricating facility that HVAC products. Staring pay went from $8.50 to $15.00 an hour.

Sad.

Already responded to this, not the violent criminals and drug dealers, rapists, terrorists and cat and dog eaters that Trump was saving America from.

Thanks for confirming the issues I brought up in my post.
