New injectable HIV prevention drug hailed as milestone

Just approved by the US FDA two days ago.

Two shots a year and you're done. 99% effective protection.

Based on the last link, sounds like Thailand could be on the list to get it quickly.

I'm surprised they will allow this. The HIV positive stability drugs are a MOUNTAIN of profit for Big Pharma.

There is already an injectable version available in Thailand, last time i looked Pulse had it for 20k every two months, even Red Cross it's 10k+, better to just stick to Travuda generic 500 baht a month

Ms Google tells me ... " A month's supply of Truvada is nearly $2,000 without insurance (a generic version costs about $60 per month) "

So ฿65k or ~฿2k for generic in USA.  Something seriously wrong with USA healthcare.

Seems inexpensive to avoid getting sick in TH, or even being sick for a local or sexpat.

There’s also a generic version of Descovy available in Thailand at about the same price. The real issue with all these once a day meds, or even the shot every two months, is consistency. It's not just a cost issue. Many can afford it. But people either forget or get lazy with it over time, which defeats the whole purpose. That’s how they slowly drift back into high risk situations, thinking they’re protected when they’re really not. The idea now is that a shot only needed twice a year, like this new one, might finally give people better long-term protection.

Yep if someone can't remember to take a pill a day they should get the injections, probably better for sex workers with their sometimes chaotic lives. Cost is too high for them in Thailand, not sure if free.

Personally i take Travuda generic daily, easy, in a 7 day pill box from Mr DIY. I'll be switching to Descovy generic soon hopefully

Consistency is often the biggest issue with daily medication regimens. People either forget to take it or mistakenly think they already have. Sometimes they run out and delay refilling for a week or two. There are just too many ways a daily routine can break down. With other medications, missing a dose here or there might not be critical, but with this one, consistency is everything if you want to maintain proper protection.
