Thread gave me the final kick to register for TrueMoney. I found the process fairly straightforward. Scanning passport a couple of times until they and me were satisfied. Job selection is indeed lacking (foreign) retired. I am an unemployed houseman now waiting for feedback. Hopefully not forever 🤣 1

Do please explain how a 'long-time expat retiree here in Thailand, and living frugally', gets his hands on such a card. You can get a prepaid or virtual card or a secured physical card by pledging a deposit. Not perfect but very useful. 1
henryford1958 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago No cash payment at the cinema. I won't be seeing any more films then 1
simon43 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I'm like the OP, retired, use my Bangkok Bank debit card to pay for Lazada/AliExpress. I have never used a card to pay for goods in a bricks and mortar shop, nor ever been asked to pay other than with cash.... 1

The first time they refused my cash order for a 160 Baht coffee, I walked 3 doors down and bought a cuppa for 60 baht. And it was just as good. They've probably saved me 5000 baht over the past 2 years because I also don't like pulling out the plastic for a $5 purchase. 160b for a coffee is criminal, people who pay that need a good hard slap. 1

Likely they will add "Aseannow" as an occupation. 2

It does seem the be the coffee/donut/waffle huts (and of course many Starbucks) which are cashless. Most, if not all, of the various outlets in our village have QR codes to pay, they all still accept cash. "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
Ohyesuare Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I recently successfully registered for TrueMoney Wallet and it was approved after a few days. If you have a long term visa and send them a scan of it, you can also unlock all features like sending the funds to bank accounts as well. The Virtual Mastercard is very useful. 1 1

I thought it would be great for using Grab without any foreign CC uplift. It's OK until you have a problem with a purchase, where getting resolution was impossible.

But this modern cashless craze is restricting my ability to pay. (I don’t have a credit card.) After many years of being a loyal weekly customer of Major Cineplex, I now cannot pay for a movie. Okay, now I see that True Move, my mobile phone company, has the True Move Wallet where I could top up a wallet account with cash via 7/Eleven. Their website said foreigners like me could do it, but the online procedure was arcane beyond comprehension and didn’t work. So, I go to the True store in Siam Paragon (because they always spoke good English and were very polite and helpful in the past) to enroll in their Wallet service, but they only gave me a phone number to call, which was only in Thai, and otherwise ignored me. Next, my Thai wife accompanied me to the True store in Central Pinklao. I had my passport, etc. and was hopeful they could process me. But the girl there told my wife that foreigners could not get the True Move Wallet. Can anyone here enlighten me about this? Thanks in advance. A bit off topic, but do you know that you can get a Major Cineplex Next Card at the counter in Major Cineplex that you can top up at the ticket desk. it gives discount on tickets, and you can use to pay for tickets at the touch screen machines. This website might help you getting a True Money Wallet: https://truemoneytransfer.truemoney.com/application-document/

It seems to be based on conspiracy theories about banks. You are quite right that those people are going to be screwed moving forward. Some people never move with tech, my parents refused to use ATMs

Yep, I only found out that those clowns no longer accept cash when I tried to pay for an Americano with a 1,000 THB note while awaiting the results of a blood test at a local hospital a couple of days ago. It therefore came as a huge relief to be informed by the doctor I subsequently saw that I should give up drinking caffeine-laden Americanos because of my medical condition. As a result, I won't need to do business with this rabble ever again in any event!😛
