A brazen armed robbery occurred at the Lotus Baan Suan shopping complex in Chonburi’s Mueang District on the morning of 26 June, with a gold shop targeted and a police officer injured in a dramatic attempt to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

It depends on what you mean by "almost the same."
As mentioned in the post by @fredwiggy, they:
I have known both Thai people from Isan and Lao people who, while not speaking the other's language formally, can understand each other perfectly well.
So for a native speaker of either language, it would seem they are pretty close.
Thailand will get a big time super bad press attention from this if it happens, that is guaranteed. Like the last nail in the coffin if they make this move.
That's an interesting way to look at it, and you may very well be right - I hope you are right.
