Accident Mother Carrying Baby, Killed by Taxi on Zebra Crossing in Pathum Thani

A 34-year-old Laotian woman was killed and her five-month-old baby injured after they were struck by a taxi while crossing a pedestrian crossing on Lam Luk Ka Road on the night of 28 June. The incident occurred near Soi Lam Luk Ka 69, Lam Luk Ka District, Pathum Thani Province.

 

Emergency services were alerted shortly before 22:00. Pol. Sub-Lt Ratchata Rattanajongjitkorn from Khu Khot Police Station, paramedics from Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital and rescue teams from Ruamkatanyu and Rom Sai Foundations rushed to the scene.

 

The mother was found lying motionless on the road with severe head trauma. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her infant son was discovered nearby, injured and crying in distress. He was immediately transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

 

The vehicle involved in the fatal crash was a yellow taxi bearing Bangkok registration plate. Eyewitnesses said the driver failed to stop and attempted to flee. A quick-thinking local resident pursued the taxi and managed to intercept it near Khlong 5, not far from an oil depot. The taxi had visible damage, including a cracked windscreen, from the impact by the victim and a broken left fender.

 

The driver, later identified as Mr Amarin, was handed over to police. He claimed he had not seen the mother and child crossing the road.

 

Pol. Lt. Col. Prasit Sombunjit, Deputy Inspector at Khu Khot Police Station, confirmed that the driver was tested for alcohol, but no alcohol was detected in his system. Nonetheless, police have charged him with two serious offences:

 

1. Reckless driving causing death

2. Failing to stop and provide assistance after a traffic accident, regardless of fault and not identifying himself to nearby officials.

 

Mr Wiwat, 54, the woman’s employer, told reporters that she had been working legally at his roadside eatery for several months. “Every evening, after her shift, she would cross the zebra crossing with her child to get home. I heard the crash and ran out. It was devastating to find it was her,” he said.

 

Local residents also confirmed she was crossing at a marked pedestrian crossing at the time of the collision. They condemned the driver for attempting to flee and praised the bystander who chased him down.

 

The victim’s body has been taken to hospital, while her child remains under medical care. The case has sparked renewed calls for greater enforcement of pedestrian safety and stricter penalties for hit-and-run offences.

Don't know what is wrong with Thais involved in accidents. They always flee rather than accept responsibility for their actions. Good that someone chased him down. 

It is unfortunate now the baby will grow up without a mother. I do hope her being Laotian does not hinder prosecution and payments to the family for the life changing damage this driver has caused.

They just aim and drive fast straight towards them.  Watch the video of the Foreigner crossing the zebra crossing in Chiang Mai and watch her baby getting thrown 10 m down the road in the tram.

When you have an accident in Thailand and you call the insurance company the first thing they ask you has the driver driven off!  So it must happen all the time if your insurance company that's the first thing they ask you.

I don't ever trust Zebra crossings over here, no one complies with them. Poor lady and poor child, I hope there is someone there to take care of the kid especially with his mother being Laotian and likely not having an extended family here.

Many have never accepted responsibility in their lives. For them it is something other people do not them. This guy should get a minimum of 10 years in jail, it is after man slaughter

It would be a welcome change from drug/drunk farang idiots who have a bike accident with no helmet/insurance etc who set up GFM's.

It takes a real insect type to flee the scene of an accident after you have mowed somebody down, somebody completely without conscience, and somebody who has absolutely no respect for a fellow human beings. 

 

This numskull says he hit them because he didn't see them, but he didn't see them because he wasn't looking. If you have your eyes open at all times you are going to see a pedestrian crossing the street, unless you're absolutely unconscious or drunk. I hope this man gets locked up for a very, very long time.

Be better if people were made responsible for their actions and if Thailand had proper driving tests not the video with some questions.

Were you driving with your eyes shut tight? What an excuse? All road crossings in this country are death traps. The driver was obviously trying to offer a silly and ridiculous excuse, hoping to get away from blame and compensation. It is the poor lady from Laos who got killed by this species. I hope the driver gets a lengthy incarceration.

You can call me defeatist or negative or any other adjective, but having lived here 20 plus years I think this part of your post is 100% accurate.

There are many many initiatives that could be started in order to improve the road situation. None of them will be implemented for any longer than a week, max a month.
 

Why?  Because it’s up to the Thai people in the form of their government to carry them out and live them every day. They don’t and won’t.

 

Which means that the RTP are the body that have to ensure compliance with laws and the judiciary who have to punish non compliance.

 

So, the best you can hope for is that this particular guy gets taken off the road. Everything else is a pipe dream

If you recall the data from a prior article it said that 14 pedestrians are killed daily in Thailand.

 

I imagine not all are the fault of a driver as I've witnessed some pretty crazy people walking/crossing the roads stupidly. 

 

A lot of articles and remarks are about zebra crossings, what about the pedestrian walkways in front of stores like Lotus, Big C, and Makro? How often do you see vehicles give the right-of-way to those going in/out of the stores? Do you stop for them? I do.......  until I see that the pedestrian waiting to cross isn't paying one bit of attention.

I still continue to witness many riding without helmets. While driving across town I count how many helmetless drivers/riders I see....  I easily reach 100 with only going 1km or 2km around the town. And to top it off just a few hours ago when I went out I witnessed a ranking police officer on a scooter without a helmet!

 

I saw one scooter (which is occasionally seen) with 5 wearing no helmets.....  That one scooter alone would be 10k THB revenue....

Education and being taught respect for life is first. Second is extreme punishment if you drive through a pedestrian zone and kill someone. When others see a 10 year mandatory jail sentence with no possibility of leniency, others think that could be them and slow the hell down around people.

Also more stringent training and not allowing the ability to PAY FOR a driver's license.

And no paying compensation in lieu of a jail sentence. A civil judgement should come after the jail term, so the family who is left behind, especially without a breadwinner, can survive.

Yes, spend a little money and build pedestrian overpasses. End of pedestrian accidents if the people use them.
