What do locals think of foreigners living in rural parts of Thailand on very modest budgets?

I used to wear flip flops everywhere but found my feet getting damaged and skin around the heals cracking, rough.

Now I don't leave home without wearing shoes.

havent had that problem wearing flip flops - not yet anyway.

it's the opposite. back home in winter, would get the heel cracks.

you can try taking foot baths.

and if you get caught in the rain, shoes take 2 days to dry out. need flip flops in thailand. that's why so many locals wear them.

Incredible, another one of your extremely detailed, insightful and philosophically well-rounded responses. Can always rely upon you to add so much value to the discourse.

Whatever he's making in his retirement is more than the average local makes here anyway. Just to live here you need to make at least the minimum, or at least the locals think you do. No one knows how

Exactly. You can't dress up that much here like back home to show off how rich you are.

It's too hot.

You can buy quality sandals with straps, polo shirt and a fake rolex.

Yep, off to buy some nice sandals.

i have some decent shirts

I'll pass on the rolex. i don't need or like to appear rich.

I try to charm people with my personality. Doesn't always work, but trying to look rich seems crass to me.

Even if I was filthy rich, I would never wear a Rolex, especially in Thailand.

Drug dealers and gangsters wear Rolex.

Do you mean the white ones? Arn’t they know as white trailer trash?

White, black, brown......doesn't matter. Poor people are depressing.

Yes, the rain is annoying when wearing shoes, if I'm on the bike and raining, at times I'd take my shoes off, just wear the socks 😂

When my shoes get wet, time to wash, place in a pillow case, then washing machine.

I’ve noticed there are some older foreigners who choose to settle in rural villages of Thailand on low retirement incomes. They often rely solely on a fixed government or state pension, may have little or no savings, shop mostly at fresh markets to keep costs down, and live quite frugally, sometimes wearing older or inexpensive clothing that doesn't present them so well.

I’m curious how local Thai communities perceive these foreigners. Are they generally accepted as part of the community? Do locals look down on them for living so cheaply and trying to emulate a very inexpensive local lifestyle? Do they wish these foreigners would return to their home countries? Do they feel these foreigners should be spending more to help the local economy or contributing something financially to the community? Or are they mostly indifferent and unconcerned either way?

SoCal1990 You forget that some of us have wonderful Thai Families and basically, we bring up our Granddaughters or our Daughters as we treat them as such!!!
Yes, I live in a rural village and the locals know I provide many things and yes we pay taxes on everything too.

Well, I love it here. Don't think there is a better place to be in the whole world.

Beautiful nature. Beautiful people. Beautiful life.

Yes, chicks wear their flip flops everywhere, you rarely see them in shoes, the skin on their feet is always so soft, not damaged.

Similar for me, but seems to be seasonal. Now we are in the rainy season, walking barefoot in the garden causes no problems. Hot season I get cracking heels.

Agree, and I can't really think of a better place, or I'd be there.  As I don't need to be here, I actually want to be here in TH.

I could probably be just as happy, and or bored at times, elsewhere.  Like the added freedom, stress free, and inexpensive existence here.   Ease of seeing our daughter, though she has little time off of work, so that doesn't keep us here as much, as one would think.

As driving 8 - 10 hrs round trip with a hotel stay, just to spend the day with her, once a month, isn't much different than flying in from a neighboring country once a month, for a long weekend at the Big Mango.

or not rich as the case maybe???

TBH if anyone is looking down on them, it will mostly be other foreigners, especially dudes from their own countries.

I sold my 4x4 about 6 years back because I don't need a 4x4 any more, but if you live in a village a wise choice, eh.......🤭

Yeah always detailed and in depth. Jordan Peterson has nothing on that guy with his dots and emojis. He could say look go visit the Mekong towns of x,y and z. Go visit the caves and villages in this area. He never helps anyone with useful info. I recommend 3 whale rock and the whole drive from Nong Khai to Chiang Khan. On the way back you could check out Erawan cave.

Sounds boring. Driving and snorkelling trips are the best things to do in Thailand. Explains your posts.

I don’t get it, Susan. You’ve posted that same photo of a white pickup at least ten times in the past twelve hours. Are we supposed to be impressed you finally scraped together enough to rent a car for a day? Nobody gives a toss what you do or what you drive. I’ve got five vehicles in my car park, never posted a single picture of any of them because nobody cares. It’s honestly pathetic how proud you are of a rented pickup, like it’s some grand achievement. It’s the most childish flex imaginable. The fact you think anyone would be impressed is mind-blowing. I can’t even begin to imagine what runs through your stunted brain all day.

I live in a rural area of Thailand. It seems to me that Thais in my area judge farangs on the latter's behavior more than money because the farang has very little to no money to offer. So either these farangs are accepted for who they are by each individual Thai, or not. But I am sure that some of these farangs can have friendly Thai neighbors if they want.
