Foreigners Flaunting Wealth in Thailand: How Is It Viewed?

Featured Replies

If a Thai has a problem with my blatant show of wealth I beat them around the head with a 5 inch thick wad of 1,000 baht notes until they are unconscious.

Problem solved.

Those who display wealth are often poor people in disguise, Thais will fall for it of course

Some of the financially successful foreigners living in Thailand display their wealth by buying luxury condos or building large houses, driving expensive cars, wearing flashy designer clothing, and openly spending big in restaurants and nightlife spots.

These displays of affluence can particularly stand out in rural or less economically developed areas of the country, where local incomes are quite a lot lower and there isn't much of a local middle class.

I wonder how local Thai communities perceive foreigners who make their money visibly seen by others in Thailand. Are they admired for their success, spending and helping of the local economy, or do they spark jealousy, distaste and resentment among locals?

you must be new here or just trolling, what is it Bob

Very poorly, as Thais who come into money only build very modest looking houses and drive very unassuming cars. Ostentatious spending is unheard of in Thailand...True, some of the houses in the village look like butcher's baroque, but probably Ukrainians or Russians.

Every watched a Thai "soap" on TV?

How many foreigner loosing their 5-10 baht necklace in fex Pattaya?

Motorcycle passing and the passenger rip it off and they run away.

Whatever it is, the result is a lot of legs being opened.

Hooray for violent crime! 🙂

I love Thailand and am realitivly "wealthy" but in all honesty I doubt anyone with real wealth would come to Thailand, let alone live here

Flaunting wealth in a foreign country whoever and wherever you are is never a good idea - leave it to the wealthy of that country

A system glitch where I have reported the duplicate posts and asked for them to be removed.

Suppose you earn a good living. Would you prefer to purchase a nice condo or live in one of the subpar places where the average local is often relegated to?

"where money goes to die"

What are you trying to say?

Just makes you a target for scamming by someone... much better to keep levels of wealth secret. Also, rich people with class never talk about money... it's crass and vulgar.

Old money often acquired by ripping off others, how would you call that?

Nice bitter comment... give you that and you can easily reverse that notion too with the new scammers ripping of everyone to get rich quick.

Could not agree more. Was just saying the same thing to my mate over a bottle of champers and a plate of caviar and smoked salmon.

Yes, but a condo in Bangkok or Pattaya won't stick out like a sore thumb as building the most lavish home in a remote village.

You can live like a king for $2500 a month, what else do you need?

Why do you need a Rolex in Angkor or Nana?

Where are you gonna drive a Lambo?

You can always get discounts on biz class.

Why would you flash wealth in a foreign corrupt country?

I try to be clean and a normal looking schlump

There are an increasing number of very wealthy non-Thai individuals  living in Thailand. (Multi as opposed to merely single dollar millionaires)
the country has many advantages when compared to Monaco,Dubai,  Switzerland etc etc.

Subject to Thai govt policy changes, i would expect this trend to continue.

if things continue  as they are the country will be a very different place in a decade or so.
