While there has always been overstayers - I have a theory on the dregs of what Thailand has let in as of these past few years.

There is an increasing exponentially a massive number of rootless, jobless and penniless individuals. UK, EU many of them are possibly on the dole. In the US we generally speaking do not give able bodied white people money to lay about although I've met my fair share of bull<deleted> disability recipients here.

The theory:

These people are in general lazy and not inclined to follow rules to begin with. In fact many of them are petty criminals.

There is little interest to follow the rules and laws of the nation than to keep oneself legal both in reporting and in matters of their visa and/or extensions. They simply don't care I have always walked the borderline between employment and unemployment, freedom and incarceration.

This lot arrives and realizes the hassle and cost of staying legal. The decision is that made simply to stay on until they are caught. They will pay a maximum fine of $20,000 b and sent on their way.

The penalty of being blacklisted is of no consequence to these individuals because they never have/had any intention of returning anyway.

They are probably on a one shot lark to bum around outside their country. If the opportunity were to present itself again which they are inclined not to believe it will they will simply find another country and do something similar.

The world is changing

It doesn't 'sound good' to those who actually understand what exponential growth is. It sounds like exaggeration in order to sensationalize the topic.

555...... How many people on here understand exponential growth do you think?

Growth must follow a precise rule to be called exponential.

Just because something is growing doesn’t mean it’s exponential.

Many things look exponential at first but level off quickly

But it always sounds good to say exponential growth.

Exponent of times a quantity that is multiplied by itself probably isn’t a component of overstayers. Maybe more like a multitude of a fraction of a static.

Twice this week someone has made claims of an 'exponential increase' of something. First it was obesity, now it's overstayers. Just opinions and flowery language, or is there data?

Just how many fat over stayers are there?

The second quote ( below because I am unable to insert it above) rather reveals the prism through which the discussion is framed!

Yes, it should have appeared under the name Khao Hom. I'm not quite sure what happened there. Sorry!

Looks like yet another trolling anti-white westerner thread zeroing in on the US and Europe. No mention of scamming Chinese hoards or penniless Indians that camp on the beach at night instead of having a hotel room and bring electric rice cookers with batteries so the can cook outside... not even a mention of dodgy Russians evading the draft and trying anything and everything to stay, legally or not.

Nice try at trolling though, give you that... but ultimately a fail.

Are Russians considered dodgy just because they evade the draft? It’s not the first time I’ve seen Westerners accuse them of this. Do you really think that makes them morally inferior to you? Would you respect them more if they went off to kill Ukrainians instead? Or you just don’t care and use this accusation without giving it any thought?

They did a cost/benefit analysis and discovered the most economically viable way to remain in Thailand.

The best bargain is the free rent they get in your head.

Western countries are great for getting additional funds from their government whilst traveling. Most will give you a few quid whilst you await the decision.  There's free food at food banks and in some places you can trade that food for booze or whatever tickles your fancy.  Just show up in the proper attire and have a credible sob story.

So, you've just confirmed my theory. 👍

Food banks.. Fing homeless, government handouts. That's not going to end well and I could not be any happier.

Fortunately, I run into these homeless very infrequently

That's a pretty silly theory, especially when you consider that most overstayers aren't even from the countries mentioned.

Where's that exponential increase in rootless Westerners roughing it out in Thailand illegally? Only in the OP's head.

OP comes across as just another arrogant yank,  Trying to big himself up, by belittling others less fortunate than himself. He was quick to cite the Brits as an example of what he considers bad behaviour,  He could have used this article to add some balance to his impotent rant

With the usual air of moral authority  he is obviously  very concerned about the life style choices of others,  and as is typical of his sort he has an unnatural interest in other people visa status,

These bored angry old men need to learn to mind their own business and find something to occupy their minds,

The Op actually sounds like a jaded Thai to me, not a foreigner. There is a tone of superiority that I usually get off Thai's.

It sounds like a Thai who is complaining that there are not more wealthy foreigners around to support him or whatever business they are in.

Malaysia.. Singapore. When he left Thailand he was nervous because he though he would get problems at the airport. It went well thrue the IMM and everything was ok.He returned to Thailand after 5-6 months and never had a overstay again.

Actually, it doesn't, in a technical, mathematical sense, but I understand your observation. There are an infinite number of exponents to choose from.

Not buying into the bigotry of nationalities, but on the subject of visa status, law breakers do have an impact on those of us who stay legal and hope for stress free stays.

The Immigration Act is legislation, and law of the land, just like the criminal code. Breaches of the Act attract penalties such as incarceration, fines and exclusion.

Thailand officialdom has always proven that they are reactionary  and thus likely to introduce more draconian rules for all when a few miscreants stand out.

As a bored and angry old man who's been affected by just such an over reaction by bill dodgers, I feel justified in reveling in the fate of overstayers when they're detected.

I always thought the differential of the function had to be equal to the function?

Differential to what. Identity functions work like that. Any number can be an exponent though.

But there has been very few changes to to the penalties for overstaying, even the latest are hardly draconian.

As long as you don't overstay you don't have a problem regardless of the penalties, but if revelling in the misfortunes of others breaks your boredom, carry on , I guess you are not harming anybody.  Not sure what you were referring to with "bill dodgers" no worries no need to explain
