There "really isn't much to do" because there really isn't much to you.

Why do you think Buffett and Eastwood are still working?

To think like the OP, I would need a prefrontal lobotomy.

I'm sure Buriram, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani have interesting places to live, I prefer Chiang Rai.

We do get some strange folk on here that think they know everything, but actually know very little. Just guess, of which Hf is a prime example of spouting bar stool chat then gets shot down and tries to twist his way out of it.........😁

Though I must give him credit on his knowledge of 7/11 operations.....:clap2:

he could probably find his way around a 7-11 blindfolded.

he lives there.

that's why it doesn't even matter where in thailand he lives.

Korat is very sleepy. Udon is the best city, Nong Khai no 2. Still CM is much better.

Udon has decent farang food.

Lots of reasons to live in Udon.  Cost-effective, large expat population and less pollution than some other places. I enjoyed the brief time I spent there.

Apart from reading books, walking, gym there really isn't much to do and those things can be done anywhere.

Those are my principal activities in my old age, and keeping my (much younger) b/f & his family happy with cash flow is (mostly) a pleasure.

In sum, my life continues as it always has, mostly inside my head. Which is where I enjoy it. I can do that anywhere but my b/f needs to look after  his family so here we are.

there was a guy on here, farang in issan, or something like that, documenting his life in a small issan village. i found it fascinating, he seemed happy enough, but the low cost, basic level of life isn;t for me, not that for one moment i'd suggest money brings happiness, but is does bring a level of comfort and security.

anyway, horses for courses, depends on your expectations from life, if life in rural, poor thailand with few amenities suits you then all power to you. not for me though.

I agree with u.I lived with ny exwife and our kids in surin for about 6 years. That was the only reason i stayed there.

I worked offshore in Singapore.. Malaysia.. Indonesia and India that time.6 weeks on/off.It was wery boring in the afternoon and nighttime. The village get quiet about 8 pm and so dark.I used to go to karaoke and had some beers and whiskey. After we moved to my country i was only there for a couple of weeks a year. The rest of time i stayed in Bangkok because i always went to Thailand alone and my exwife stayed in my country. She also preferred to go alone to Thailand.I find out the reason after some time. After we divorced 8 year ago i go visit my kids grandparents everytime im in Thailand but just for a day.I dont miss the rural life at all I had some foreign friends there but all of them drank alot on daily basis.Sometimes we visit echother but everytime they was drunk. They felt lonely there.

3 of my friends drank themselves to death. The last years i stay in Bangkok and hua-hin.

I know good restaurants in every city. You don't know one. That's very strange. You must never go out to restaurants. Maybe that indicates the choices are poor.

Ditto. Round the opposite side of the lake from Sakon Nakhon. I don't like Thai cities much. OK to visit for a few hours. Having said that, we were in Ubon Ratchathani last week. Buddha event with wax candles and visiting my wife's cousin. Compared to SK it seemed big (maybe wealthy) enough to have a greater variety of stuff than S-K and was nowhere near as ugly and built-up as Krung Thep. I wouldn't want to live in the city but the suburbs are more accessible since there isn't a bloody big lake in the way. Maybe get the Chinese to build a fly-over? 😉

Sakhon Nakhon is a beautiful province. I like the town (city) too, but like you say, to visit, not to live in.

The first one is great for cycling. But I have met one or two Mr. Know It Alls.

I thought Buriram was an up and coming city. Also just good for a few hours? Not as good as Chiang Mai?

The town centre is worth 3 days. They have a nice race track and soccer stadium though. Udon has the most regular things to do. Id probably not go back to Burilam.

You asked me to name a restaurant, are you saying McDonald's is NOT classed or advertised as a restaurant..?    🤔

Come on Transam. It was me who suggested McD's is a restaurant, so it is ME who has the honour of being called a Troll by HarrisFan.
