An 84-year-old cyclist suffered a fractured pelvis after being struck by a van that ran a red light at a pedestrian crossing in the Prawet district of Bangkok. The incident, captured on CCTV, occurred at 7:03 on the 13 July, near the entrance to Soi Chaloem Phra Kiat Rama IX Soi 38, a crosswalk leading into Bueng Nong Bon Public Park, close to Suan Luang Rama IX.

The incident footage has now been widely circulated posted by the popular Facebook page Drama-addict, shows the van ignoring a red traffic light before hitting the cyclist, who was crossing legally at the designated pedestrian area. The elderly victim was thrown from his bicycle and sustained abrasions, before later being diagnosed with a broken sacrum at Prince Suvarnabhumi Hospital.

Medical staff say recovery may take up to two months, owing to the victim’s age.

The injured man’s grandchild, who submitted the clip to Drama-addict, has issued a heartfelt plea to motorists to exercise greater caution near crossings.

“The man who was hit is my grandfather,” the message reads. “He was on his way to cycle in Bueng Nong Bon as he usually does on weekends. Please, all drivers, be more mindful when approaching zebra crossings.”

The incident has renewed public concern about road safety in Bangkok, particularly the dangers faced by pedestrians and cyclists at crossings where traffic rules are frequently ignored.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the van driver will face charges.

How did he make it to 84, doing stupid things?

Guys on a death wish, hoping nothing would hit him riding his bicycle on pedestrian crossing.

The van is completely in the wrong, but I also don't like bicycles (or motorcycles) driving through pedestrian crossings, it just encourages accidents.

Looking at my received negative reactions above, it seems a few here think it's OK to ride a bike on a pedestrian crossing.

This is very dangerous, you should hop off and walk.

Vehicles are not expecting a lunatic riding their bicycle at speed across their lane. This is how accidents happen.

Ridiculous victim blaming on this thread. The video shows that the traffic light had been on red for 15 seconds as the driver approached the crossing. He could see that traffic in the opposite direction was stopped and other pedestrians were using the crossing; 100% the driver's fault.

Ha ha, we are in Thailand.

Traffic lights mean NOTHING.

Lazy guy should hop off bicycle, walk and be vigilant.

Safety on pedestrian crossings, it's called, preserving one's life.

Stupid people, do stupid things.

If this proves one thing, pedestrian crossings in Thailand are extremely dangerous. I'm very careful if using them. Hope the elderly cyclist recovers swiftly.

How would he be any safer walking his bike across when a van blows through the red light?  He'd have still been hit.

BTW, I rarely get off my bicycle and walk it across a zebra crossing.  It doesn't make me any safer, and unless there's a bunch of pedestrians, I'm not a danger to them.  The nomenclature of "crosswalk" is not meaningful.

Only an idiot would be on a pedestrian crossing without looking.

You got to be accountable, wearing your amplet won't protect you.

If you are senile or brain dead, it would be safer to cross a road on a pedestrian crossing with a blind fold on.
