USA is not a mfr based economy and doesn't have the infrastructure and hasn't since the 1980's.  Yeah there is some but we can't replace mfr across the board in any short amount if time. It will take years to re-establish it. In the mean time any added tariffs get past on to the US consumer and continues to fuel inflation.

 

Thats why trumps approach to burn down every partnership internationally at the same time,  gut the US govt and raise the debt by several trillion while giving tax cuts to the rich and taking away support for the poor.

It's not a question of whether or not it would be beneficial to make things locally, of course it would be. It's a question of whether or not it's affordable to make things locally, and whether or not the end product ends up being competitive.

 

These are very basic elements that fairly simple minds like Trump just don't understand at all.
