The official sinsod calculator for Thai marriages

I wouldn’t call anyone a liar.

Since being in Thailand I have seen some average men pull some fantastic, stunning women.

And some decent men end up with some terrible women.

Back in the UK it was generally horses for courses.

In the land of smiles the spectrum has been a lot, lot wider.
Some you think “how the hell did he get her” to “what the hell is he thinking?”

You know I am right but you will never admit I am right.

Fair enough...     but, here and Thailand, for decent folk the playing field is fairly level...

My mates here and in the UK have marred well...    Edicated, financially independent women who are well within their 'speck' and what may be referred to as socio-economic-educational status...  those here, Sin-Son paid (some quite high, mostly, if not all returned I think).

... This only seem's unbelievable for some here because of the age gap when they arrived here - for those arriving in their retirement, its a different game than for those who came here to work with decent jobs in their 20's and 30's...

  • Let's be honest, for most, its what the girl and her family think they can get away with, relying on the foreigners romantic notions and stories of "tradition".   I paid ZERO! I dont believe

  • Lovely 17 year old daughter is probably worth something.

  • Education is mostly wasted on females anyway.

That is taken into account in the official sinsod calculator.

You do know, that you are totally disgusting! Talking about all women as a commodity. You need help. Not sure where to find it though as the problem seems to be very severe. With the post above, you did a great job of disgracing another persons daughter as well. My God, there is no help for you!

I though he was talking about what he could get for sinsot from her prospective husband.

So no disgrace or disrespect, just your dirty mind.

No - well done, you've managed to spot a typo and capitalise on it...   very characteristic trolling.

The subject is sinsod and what particular characteristics are considered of value in Thailand and it is influenced by age.

Listen Richard if it were just a typo I would have picked up three in just that one sentence.

married not marred

spec not speck

and educated, not edicated

So not trolling, just helping you out.

Spec is slang for “specifications”. Speck on the other hand means a tiny piece of matter.

You have heard it somewhere but didn’t quite get it.
so cute.

Alex,

I'll have the mid-range under 150cm slim fit non-chinese virgin Latte for 302,400 please (.9x for height, 1.4x for age difference).

Correct - all thumbs when typing on the phone...  (typos)

I've been here well over two decades - I know exactly what 'spec' is when it comes to the Thai's and the manner with which they 'grade' or 'place themselves'....

... Another term they use is 'rating'... i.e. when they get hit on, on a night out, their 'rating' his high !!!...   Its an amusing term they use.

A lot of westerners marry Thai women and find the dowry/sinsod amount to pay a bit daunting.

They don’t want to pay too much, and they don’t want to pay too little and embarrass the bride in front of the whole village on the big day.

Negotiations with the parents can be tense for the novice.

Different women are valued differently.

Yesterday I had lunch with about a dozen Thai males and we decided on value after much discussion.

Closest I’ve seen to anything like this in real life? My wife’s cousin got knocked up at 18. Her boyfriend, a decent 20-year-old lad, was pushed (forced) into marrying her. They’re still together over a decade later, with a second son now.

You have no idea as usual.

sinsod is not payable if she got knocked up before the wedding.

I don’t even understand how this is even relevant.

Let’s not pretend otherwise: this is only about money. You, and others like you - yes, including some Thais - try to sanitise it by slapping the word "culture" on top. But it’s not culture. It’s exploitation dressed up in a lie

Nothing worse than a plonker showing up to another country, not having a clue, and then slagging off that country’s traditions and culture.

You have know idea, it really is a toss up between you and Fred who has the least idea of Thailand.

What a fool.

Bangkok, Jun 14 (EFE). —  Araya A.Hargate, a much sought after Thai actress, received gold, jewelry, three plots of land and cash as part of her “sin sod”, an ancient practice that can be translated as the “price of the bride.”

Araya’s husband, an affluent businessman, Visrut Rangsisingpipat spent nearly a whopping $3 million on this “dowry” that is widely practiced in Thailand.

The wedding of Araya (fondly called Chompoo, a Thai fruit) and Visrut took place last year and was widely covered by the Thai media.

In certain Asian countries, including India and China, it is a common practice for the bride’s family to give dowry in the form of gifts or cash to the groom’s family.

In Thailand the tradition is the opposite with the groom’s family paying a dowry to the bride’s family, according to an online legal portal Chawbanlaw.

The value of the sin sod, of course, depends on the social status and qualities of the bride, but in middle class families the amount can vary from $2,800 to $28,800.

That you haven’t seen sinsod in real life is just an indication that you either

a) don’t get invited to weddings

b) you don’t know what is actually going on at weddings, the idiot farang.

It is an integral part of the marriage ceremony in both Buddhist and Muslim weddings in Thailand.

Of course it is...   Sin-sod is not governed by fixed rules. It's a culturally fluid practice that varies hugely depending on region, social class, education, age, family reputation etc...  whether the bride is a virgin - is relevant in some areas not all and that facet is 'often' avoided for the 'reputation' of both families....

Trying to treat it like a transaction governed by rigid and strict norms is both reductive and ignorant.

The role of the tua-gîa is precisely to navigate those nuances which you clearly do not have a full grasp of having only 'sniffed' at the surface.

This idea that you're applying hard and strict rules, and generalising them as rigid constraints across the cultural, social, and economic landscape of Thailand, highlights your idiocy.

Oh look out, we have a change of tune.

Seems like someone has done a google search.
A bit of back peddling with a back flip thrown in.

At least you have learned something today.

9 minutes ago, MalcolmB said:

What a fool.

You've deliberately cherry picked and misunderstood again...   I'm referring to when its an OLD man (like yourself) and a Teenager...

Then its economic desperation....

The last wedding I went to the Sin-Sod was 50 Million Baht, held at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok (5 year age gap).

A 60 year old man, offering 400,000 baht for a 17 year old, is something quite different.....   the family would not let a 17 year old girl go to a 60 year old man if they had any other option, and the girl wouldn't want to - its not a free-choice, its one made of economic desperation....

...  That you can't see this difference, once again highlights your depravity.

Along with the usual ridiculous claim to make himself sound “up there” like his previous claim that he can get his Thai friends off drink driving charges by making a phone call.

If your imaginary friend had of used the official sinsod calculator he would have saved himself some money.

Sinsod is supposed to be returned to the couple. If it isn't you married a wrong one.

Honestly I do feel sorry for Thai women who marry farangs like you and Fred who are just too stubborn and set in your ways to accept Thai culture but wanting to marry a Thai girl and live in Thailand.

If you don’t like or can not accept the local culture and traditions you should not be here with the local women.
It must put them in awkward situations.
