Mandalay Region — Seven Myanmar junta soldiers, including a deputy strategic commander, have been killed in fierce clashes with resistance forces in Madaya and Patheingyi townships, the People’s Defense Force–Mandalay (MDY-PDF) announced.

Fighting erupted on 21 July and has centred on Htanpinkone village in Madaya and Thayetkaing and Myakanthar villages in Patheingyi — all now reportedly under the control of revolutionary forces. The MDY-PDF claimed that among the dead was Phyo Kyaw, a Defence Services Academy graduate from its 54th intake, who was believed to be serving as a deputy strategic commander.

The group also reported seizing three firearms and a cache of ammunition during the three-day engagement. Clashes reportedly involved soldiers from Infantry Battalion 239, previously linked to surrendering in Laukkai. Resistance forces say they identified the unit through markings on confiscated weapons and supplies.

In an attempt to retake lost ground, junta forces launched a series of airstrikes targeting resistance positions in both townships. Despite this, the MDY-PDF maintains control over the immediate areas of conflict — although it acknowledged losing Thabeikkyin Township, which had been in rebel hands until recently.

The Mandalay clashes are the latest in a string of confrontations across Myanmar as resistance groups continue to challenge military dominance in key regions.
