China has stepped in with vital humanitarian support for Myanmar, providing emergency food assistance to over 320,000 people affected by the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central regions in March.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced this week that Beijing’s latest contribution will fund the purchase of 4,900 metric tons of rice—enough for a one-month food ration for communities in the worst-hit areas, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Shan, Bago, and Nay Pyi Taw. WFP will coordinate with local partners to ensure swift distribution.

More than four months on, the situation remains dire. Over 6.3 million people across the affected regions are in urgent need of food, shelter, and basic protection, according to UN figures. Thousands remain displaced, now facing the added threat of monsoon rains while living in fragile conditions.

“The earthquake struck a country that was already grappling with conflict, displacement, and deepening food insecurity,” said Michael Dunford, WFP’s Country Director for Myanmar. “This latest contribution from China comes at a critical moment, helping us reach families who have lost everything.”

WFP assessments show that nearly 40% of impacted communities are currently dependent on aid or informal networks for food. The disaster has further strained a population already battered by years of internal conflict and economic instability.

China has played a frontline role since the early days of the disaster response, and this donation underscores Beijing’s growing humanitarian presence in the region. However, aid workers stress that more sustained international support is urgently needed to prevent further deterioration.

As Myanmar struggles to recover, contributions like China’s remain essential to avoid a full-scale hunger crisis among the quake’s many survivors.
