DLT keeping the original foreign driver's license or not when converting to a Thai license

Featured Replies

Hello,
Can anybody confirm that the DLT branch in Banglamung won't keep my original foreign driver's license when I apply for a Thai license based on my foreign license?
Thanks in advance!

No... The DLT do not 'keep' your original home driving License when obtaining a Thai License.

I can't speak specifically for Banglamung - however, with so many foreigners obtaining driving licences here - such an issue has never once been mentioned.

Well, that's the way it works in some countries. Japan, France, Germany, for example.

He's probably had that experience in another country.  For instance Texas will require you to hand over the Thai license if you are get a Texas license based on the Thai one.  I said no and took the written and driver examinations to get my Tx driver's license renewed after letting it expire a few years earlier.

They did to me in Australia (yes way back, unsure about now) and did in Vietnam until 01/01/2025

I always drove on my UK one, backed by an International in the USA, and never bothered to get a State licence... moved around a bit, Perhaps I pushed my luck. I only got pulled over once in Kansas City, MO. The police man (big bugger) was a little flummoxed by my licence and had to call it in to verify I could drive there on it. Rented many cars on it no issue.
