With 29.3% of new vehicles sold in Thailand in June being EV's, I wonder exactly who is the idiot here?

Yea, I'm so stupid and fell for it hard.   I hate saving 40k-50k THB a year energizing my POS BEV that out performs all ICEV that I've owned, and cost less to maintain & operate.

That convenience of simply plugging in at home, using excess solar just sucks.   I'd much rather go to the petrol station and waste 10 minutes every week, and dish out money to them, for that fuel that degrades every part of the car it comes in contact with, even the exhaust.

So stupid of me 😎

My EV gets 100km for 12 units = 48bht

My honda click gets 100km for 2l = 64bht

My diesel pickup gets 100km for 10l = 320bht

So my EV car is 20% cheaper to run than my ICE scooter and 85% cheaper than my pickup, so where's the con?

UK  Public Charging

to charge a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range  from 10%-80%. All of these costs are for a pay-as-you-go charge, meaning you can start charging with a contactless credit or debit card, rather than using an app.

price ranges from

cheapest

Tesla owner 120-250kW off-peak (4am-8am)

Monthly fee £0.00

Cost per kwh £0.24

Total cost of charging Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range from 10%-80%  £12.43 or B538

Most expensive

Monthly fee £0.00

Cost per kwh £0.90

Total cost of charging Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range from 10%-80%  £46.62  or B2,017

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range has a  84kWh battery so charging from 0 to 100% would be £74.25 or B3,213

Me? Well, I'm not in Thailand but in the UK. Bought a new Mercedes-Benz V-Class diesel just 3 months ago. Range of 650 miles on a 5 minute fill-up to full. 41 miles per gallon. Same purchase price as the equivalent electric, EQV that has a meagre range of 222 miles on a 45 minute charge on a fast charger - if available (and at best). My vehicle will last far longer than an EV with no replacement of battery needed. Fine for the EVangelists who can charge at home from solar who only need a short range and are happy with massive depreciation and battery replacement costs. BTW: My last V-Class was 6 years old and it sold for only £18,000 less than purchase price (just £3,000 per year depreciation with 192,000 miles). EV's suit some but not everyone. Choose your best option.I know the best option for me.

it's just dumb to say that, EVs suit some people but are simply not practical for many due to the inherent constraints,  limited range, charging time, and access to home charging being the main, not to mention price. EVs suit some, but it's horses for courses, they simply don;t work for many.

The ones buying them.

IMG_8001.jpeg

I asked ChatGPT to analyse used EV prices in the UK

Sales are booming despite falling prices:

  • Used EV sales rose 71% in Q1 2024 compared to the same period in 2023

  • Monthly sales tripled from ~7,000 to nearly 20,000 units between 2023 and 2025

If you’re considering buying used, 2025 might be the sweet spot.

We are exceptionally lucky in Thailand in that we have a superb charging infrastructure, very cheap electricity and EV's that carry very little Tax.

10 days ago I drove from Chiang Rai to near Tak (halfway to Bangkok) and charged up in Tak for the weekend, one charge at the beginning of the return journey.  Nobody at the charging station and this was on a holiday weekend.

We stopped for a pee break after Phayao, nobody at the charging station there either, we didn't charge, we didn't need to.

You say what I say about EVs is "dumb" but you're the one talking about something that he clearly knows nothing about!

I am have owned 3 EVs so let me try to educate you

"limited range" My BYD Seal has a 600km range, so I always need a comfort break before I need to charge.

"charging time" My round trip to BKK is 900km and I do a 20 minute charge on the way down and another on the way back

"access to home charging" I do charge both my EVs at home 99% of the time and I charge them for free from my solar, something that becoming increasingly common in the UK and Thailand.

Condo charging is also becoming increasingly common both in the UK and Thailand, with the UK is expanding charging for those with no off-street parking though "under-pavement" or "lamp post" charging.

If you actually owned an EV you would know that without home charging  you can charge once a week while you are doing something else like shopping or getting a coffee.

"not to mention price" People who know nothing about EVs still think that EVs are more expensive than ICE cars or try to compare EVs with ICE cars not in the same category.

My BYD Seal is a class D Saloon (Sedan) the same as the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. It is cheaper than both and has far better performance.

My second car is a 7 seat BYD M6  - it is available with 6 seats with "Captains Chairs" or 7 seats.

These cars in Thailand can be purchased with 7 seats according to AutolifeThailand

https://www.facebook.com/share/1R2UAWuz32/ and all are more expensive.

BYD sure do love slashing prices to build market share!

As I've said before, I think this is a big dis-incentive to buy new EVs here right now - but great for anyone looking for secondhand.

And thank you Thai government for keeping electricity prices so low (not sure how many billon USD EGAT is shouldering right now in subsidy costs!)

No Diesel Fuel subsidies?

BANGKOK (NNT)The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) announced a diesel price increase of 50 satang per liter effective on Apr 6 amid concerns over the escalating cost of subsidizing fuel, which is nearing a 100 billion baht debt. The price adjustment applies to both standard and premium diesel, setting the prices at 30.44 baht and 42.44 baht per liter, respectively.

The decision follows the OFFO's struggle to manage debts from maintaining diesel prices at 30 baht per liter since last September and subsidizing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for over two years.

The BYD Seal has been out in Thailand since 2023, when I purchased mine. Since then BYD has released new models and dropped the prices of older ones, meanwhile legacy autos are still charging the same price for 10 year old models.

You have to be pretty "dumb" to buy a 10 year old car with no discount.

An EV can charge a phone or run the aircon without running the traction motors

Think you answered your own question but just to be sure - obviously the 29.3%, the other 70.7% weren't as gullible.

Well at least they have an asset that doesn't lose 80% of its value after 4 years and their insurance premiums are very reasonable and actually decrease YoY, unlike your EV's.

Every month the number increases, people are beginning to trust EV's.

I agree EV's are utter tosh, ugly looking plastic toy cars,  massive loss of value in a short period, sky rocketing insurance costs, very low sum insured values, manufactures going out of business, long waiting list for spare parts, environmental impact of manufacture negates any environmental benefits, tyres need replacing 35% sooner than same size ICE vehicle, worldwide sales rapidly declining (other than china and other gullible SE asian countries), only a time and running cost saving if you spend B10,000's on a home solar system, always stressed out looking for charging points that work etc, etc. Yep got to agree Utter Tosh!

All new cars fall in value as soon as you buy them. My EVs come with 8 years warranty on the car and the traction battery so I don't plan to sell them until then.

All 8 year old cars in Thailand are worth the same - practically nothing.

As for the "80% of its value after 4 years"

You have any evidence to support that or did you just pull that number out of your ...?

Price new

@Cardano doesn't own an EV

@Cardano has never purchased insurance for an EV

@Cardano thinks EV insurance doesn't reflect the replacement cost of the car

@Cardano thinks EV insurance doesn't decrease each year as the car's value decreases :cheesy:
