A 59-year-old woman was stabbed to death in the basement car park of Myanmar Plaza in Yangon on 5 August, prompting renewed scrutiny of public safety at one of the city’s busiest shopping centres.

The victim, Daw San San Aye, was attacked by two unidentified men at around 5pm. Security personnel responded swiftly and attempted to save her, but she later succumbed to her injuries. The motive remains unclear, and the suspects are still at large.

Myanmar Plaza released a statement nearly 24 hours after the incident, expressing deep sorrow and confirming cooperation with local police to apprehend the perpetrators.

The mall has since implemented heightened security measures, including upgrades to surveillance systems and increased patrols in key areas.

The killing has shocked Yangon residents and sparked concern over the adequacy of security in commercial spaces.

While violent crime in Myanmar’s urban centres remains relatively rare, the incident underscores growing unease amid broader instability since the 2021 military coup.

Authorities have yet to release further details, and investigations are ongoing. For now, Myanmar Plaza says it is committed to ensuring the safety of its patrons and staff — but for many, the tragedy has already left a lasting mark.
