A refuse collection worker was left shocked in the early hours of the 14 August, when the body of a male infant was discovered in a rubbish compactor during a routine collection in Thanyaburi district.

Police said the discovery was made at around 02;00, on Soi Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok 20 in Prachathipat sub-district. Rattanathibet Police Station’s Deputy Inspector, Pol Lt Wanitchakorn Lekdee, attended the scene along with investigators, a duty doctor from Prachathipat Hospital and Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers.

The infant, believed to have been between seven and eight months’ gestation, was found in a bloated state inside the truck’s compactor. The vehicle is registered in Bangkok and operated by Rangsit Municipality.

Kaewtin, a Myanmar national working on the truck, told officers that his team collects rubbish from the area every other day. On this round, they had emptied two bins from the mouth of the soi and compacted the waste before collecting a further three bins. “As I was compacting the rubbish, suddenly the baby’s body came out,” he said. “I was shocked and immediately alerted the driver, who called the police.”

A nearby house owner said she was appalled by the incident. “If the mother is watching this news, I want to say she is heartless for doing this,” she told reporters. “I don’t know if the baby came from someone in this soi or from somewhere else, but to throw him away like this and in front of someone’s home, is beyond cruel.”

Police have recorded the scene and are examining CCTV footage to trace whoever abandoned the infant. The body has been sent via the foundation to the forensic department at Thammasat University Hospital.
