Thailand reinforces border defences as landmine tensions flare.

The situation along the Thai-Cambodian border remains tense as the Thai Army strengthens its defensive positions across seven provinces. Jirayu Huangsub, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, provided details on recent developments, emphasising the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty.

The defence strategy involves deploying razor wire and maintaining a robust military presence across 11 key locations. This comes amid ongoing concerns about violations of Thai territory. "We are prepared to respond immediately to any breach, regardless of size," Jirayu stated.

Crucially, explosive ordnance units have identified illegally placed landmines within Thai borders, allegedly by Cambodian forces. This act violates both the ceasefire agreement and the Ottawa Treaty, which bans anti-personnel mines. "This is a serious breach of international law," Jirayu noted, adding that Thailand intends to bring the issue before the Ottawa Treaty Committee.

Negotiations with Cambodia continue, as Thailand urges its neighbour to agree to two key ceasefire terms proposed on 7 August in Malaysia. These include tackling issues surrounding call centre gangs, human trafficking, and the drug trade, alongside collaborating on landmine removal.

On the home front, the repatriation of citizens is reported to be progressing smoothly. Assurances have been given that there are no current emergencies, contrary to false reports suggesting evacuation orders. "We urge the public to rely on official sources for accurate information," Jirayu advised.

Meanwhile, locals are encouraged to report any suspicious items to authorities, ensuring community safety. "Citizens should continue life as usual but remain vigilant," Jirayu concluded, reiterating the government’s commitment to transparency and public safety.

The unfolding border situation underscores the delicate balance of regional diplomacy and the continuous need for vigilance and proactive measures to maintain peace and security.
