Train Bangkok-Hua hin from where?

Featured Replies

Are the trains from bkk to hh still departing from the old hualompong station in bkk or are they now departing from the new station in chatuchak? Are the old carriers with window down still going or there is a modern high speed option?

As suggested, check out Seat 61. https://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Bangkok_to_Southern_Thailand

The various trains have different seating options.

HH is on the southbound line so most leave late in the day for an overnight journey.

The new station is in bang sue and is called krung thep aphiwat.

Look for that name when you check on the SRT booking site to see the times.

There is no schedule posted on their site.

High speed 🤣🤣🤣.

Maybe in ten years or more, but thats wishful thinking.

I understand that SRT bought some more locomotives, but no carriages. They look exactly the same as before.

I just remember i have a picture of the schedule from hua hin station notice board, but its from january 2024.

However it may help judge frequency.

Check what is available on the SRT website.

The newer CNR carriages are used on routes to Chiang Mai (No.9/10), Hat Yai Junction (No.31/32), Ubon Ratchathani (No.23/24), and Nong Khai (No. 25/26). Click here for a 360 photo of a 1st class Cabin. The other routes use the older Daewoo sleeper carriage and are slightly cheaper. Each train only has one 1st Class sleeper carriage and so cabins sell out quickly. Visit How to Book Train Tickets Online for more information.

Train Number System:

The numbers on the trains indicate their speed and type. "Special Express" trains (numbers 1-48) are the fastest and most modern in Thailand.

Don't bother with the train to Hua Hin. Big mistake when I tried it;

- Motor vehicle is faster and saves 2-3 hours.

-Carrying luggage is a hassle

- Carriages are  uncomfortable. Usually, 3rd class with open windows that allows the diesel fumes to enter. The 2nd class AC cars have barely functional AC

- The  merchants who climb on the trains and push their "food" are never going to win a prize for hygiene.

- The taxi pickup truck drivers at Hua Hin station are as bad as the Phuket airport taxi lice. Overcharging and aggressive.

You don’t need to use those jerks, you can walk passed them. The train station is right in town next to all the hotels.

How many, and when was the last time you used the train.  You save 2-3 hours off a 4-4.5 hr train ride.  Impressive, as it takes me an hour+ to go from the hwy 35/4 intersection to central bkk (T21), non rush hour, and that a small window of late.

Really depends where they are leaving from, time of day, and class of service.  Train is definitely safer and a lot cheaper.   A nice way to get some sightseeing in also.  As always with public trans, timing is everything.

Your argument ignores reality.

1. Your argument is location and residency specific. For non residents of Bangkok, like BMA visitors, it depends on  their proximity to the train station. It took me 30 minutes to get to the train station the last time I used the SRT. Depending on the  time of day, it can take longer. Not everyone lives in the train station area. Add to that the wait to board.  A travel and wait time of at least 1 hour is a  reasonable add on.

2. The  train schedule is inconvenient. Prior to the  relocation to   KTW there was a 09.30 depart from Hualamphong. No more. it is either the 07:30 or the the trains in late afternoon and night. The departure schedule is 07:30/ 15:10 / 16:10 /16:10 / 16:50 / 17:30 / 18:50 / 19:50 / 20:30 22:50.

3. Sightseeing? The train route is not particularly  picturesque. It goes through the industrial sections of BMA and poorer areas of the region. One is not going to see anything much different than what one gets from sitting on a bus or in a vehicle.

4. Yes, the train can be safer. Cost is a different matter. If one attaches a value to time and convenience, and not a direct cost of transportation alone, then the train loses out.  No one wants to  carry a lot of luggage  to train stations and then try to find a place to hold the bag on the train.  Older visitors, people with  mobility impairments, and families with children in tow and carriages also  find the trains  inaccessible.  The train works for people who live close to KTW, are mobile and who travel light. It's a relatively small demographic.

The hotels  in close proximity to the train station are not particularly nice. They are mostly 2* and not near the nice part of the beach. Getting to the Hilton requires crossing the tracks and walking 2+ kms. The nicer hotels are located between soi 86 down to Khao Takaib. They also offer some of the best value in the city. And if one is long stay, they are closer to the  supermarkets. No one wants to walk with luggage late at night or if arriving on the  mid day diesel, pulling  luggage  in the sun or a downpour. The  pavements of Hua Hin are not conducive to wheeling anything.

You burst my bubble.  I find train rides enjoyable since I fly or drive everywhere.  Last year, I took the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
