Checkered Shirt Brigade

Featured Replies

Why is it the checkered shirt is favored by so many old gits in Thailand? Are you one of them?

Speak up loudly and proudly.

Never wear a shirt or never wear a checkered shirt? Either way, please explain.

There are far worse fashion crimes than checkered shirts.

What I find more offensive is a Chang wife-beater, cargo shorts with 17 pockets, black socks that go half-way up the calf, and a pair of luminous Crocs.

Always initiates my pharyngeal reflex. Go on - google it. :coffee1:

I haven't noticed many expats wearing checkered shirts myself but a variety of different designs. That some wear older styled clothes is just a part of their personal nostalgia. Not sure why you got attacked for this post, as they can always scroll by, it not being personal against them but just a question telling about your personal experience here.

what kind of checks? Tartans? Houndstooth?

So that was you pointing at me, laughing and taking photos of me and bob trolling ladyboys together on Soi 6 the other day?

By the way, the shorts have 22 pockets. Just sayin...

THey are mostly fat shirts.  A huge button up checkered shirt is an attempt by fatties to hide their fat.

Size 7 or 8 xl is baggie enough so the fat gut doesn´t show as much.

I see you're a checkered shirt connoisseur. Just regular ole checkers. My kid forbids me to wear them.

In the expat areas like Pattaya the checkered shirt are the most easily found shirt in the markets for cheap money.

I have a couple of check shirts which are very smart brand name ones not what you would wear everyday type, I tend to keep my clothes that long they come back into fashion.

Who wore them years ago "Ben Sherman"

I haven't been there but I do see a lot of old style patterns in the markets where they sell used clothes. I've seen shirts from stores back where I'm from in Texas which is funny.

Not a checked shirt (or striped shorts) in the bunch....

Love it!

Several old fuddy duddy expats wear checkered shirts at the expat haunts where I live, all overweight and still live in the 60's era.

I wonder why they get upset when I say, "I see you're wearing a tea towel again!"

Personally, I wouldn't be seen dead in one, but each to their own.

Tesco F&F short-sleeve check shirts. 300 baht, cool cotton and comfortable to wear. Many styles, from houndstooth checks you can wear for more formal occasions to larger checks that go nicely with the eminently sensible choice in the tropics, cargo shorts. The really loud checks I leave to Thai farmers though.

I see a lot of plaid shirts that are attractive.

Checkered as well if the colors are subtle, red and white and red and black are not that appealing to me.

Being told what to wear and then bragging about it? Sad.

Like most men I wear what I like and what others think is not that important to me.

Because every market, lotus and big sell them for 100 baht.

No stripes, but plenty of checks 🙂

Many expats are not concerned with fashion.
The statement, "The clothes make the man," might be true in the competitive business world, but holds no water for those whose lives revolve around leisure activities.
Personally, my goal is comfort, and most of my clothing is 20+ years old, soft, and comfortable.
Clean Cargo shorts and a clean cotton T-shirt or polo shirt, and a pair of sandals, is perfectly acceptable men's wear here in Thailand, even for expats.

Seems a tad classy, so I'll stick with wearing the Arsean Now standard clobber....the Leo Beer wifebeater.

Classy, yet simple. Better than the Soi Bukhao market checkered shirts.

Definitely seems to be a uniform when getting to a certain age in Pattaya, noobs also wear socks with sandals.

also old bald men in Bandanas is annoying.

I'd like to see a few comb overs you know be different if going bald

I'm really more into stripes than anything.

You have just described my neighbor's daily attire.

All that is missing is a baseball cap on backwards
