Bank account frozen

Not worried at all, i have 3 bank accounts, guess why? in case of problems down the line

I’ve held dozens of bank accounts across various countries, and never have I experienced anything like this. In the past, banks have always informed me well in advance—often months ahead—of any legislative changes that could potentially affect me. But to have a bank close my account indefinitely, without providing any explanation, and then follow up with a series of strange and unreasonable requests… this is entirely unprecedented.

Update. My BBL account is back on today 25 Aug. I went to verified the account on 19 Aug.

I have a question for you. Did you have more than 100k baht in your account when it was frozen?

Good to hear your account was unfrozen after you submitted your updated docs. I was called just this past Sat. by the bank to bring in some additional docs because I recently changed my address. It didn't have anything to do with my visa status, so my acct was not frozen. It was nice of them to call.

No. the lady at the account told me its about me opening the account on tourist visa via agent. I jokingly told her she help me open the account last year. she gives me a sheepishly grins.

Looks like they first open those accounts without money in them. Mine is still closed. Will call to my branch tomorrow and tell them I will come to sleep at their branch soon since I do not have money to pay for my accommodation.

I just got back from the central Pattaya branch. About 25 people lined up before the start of business at 8:30 am. A staffer came out at around 8 am to hand out queue tickets. Get there before 8am if you can.

I brought my passport, driver's license, copy of my rental agreement, and a top up receipt from sim provider with my full name and phone. They copied all of it and had me sign the pages - not sure if it's all necessary but they took it all. At the end I was told I would get a phone call in about 14 days.

As you may know Bangkok Bank's "Central Pattaya branch" is different from the Central branch at the Central Festival shopping mall. I could not find the correct branch name in English in Google maps, Grab, or Bolt. It's ธนาคารกรุงเทพ สาขาพัทยากลาง in Google maps - screenshot below. Screenshot_20250828_152700_Maps.jpg.76c7bf7df68ce0327610d1ad24a3a55b.jpg

Disgusting.

It didn't occur to them that this is your money,  after all?

Retiring in Thailand was a goal of mine for over 20 years. Now that Ive done it it seems like every week there's another hurdle. Can't ever let your guard down..I guess I'm no longer surprised but you'd think that the Thai property owners that rent  and sell us condos etc. would advocate a bit. Doubt anyone gives a hoot and I'll probably leave next year. T.I.T.

Hey, man. You are not alone. 14 days is something new. When I visited my branch I was told about 7 days. My account is still frozen after 10 days. And there is nobody to talk about it.  Such a Kafkaesque experience. Do we, foreigners, have any basic rights in this country?

Yeah, we were told 14 days - at least me and the guy before me...

Problems with banks often occur when there is a verification requirement or issue from the cell phone company used by the customer. As the customer has to give his phone number to the bank the name, surname and also middle name needs to match exactly as on the passport and in both the databases - bank and cell phone provider. If you gave only your first name and surname say to the cell phone company, but at your bank your account is with your first name, middle name and surname..then it gets blocked.

Looks like very poor planning to me in the sense that they've frozen too many accounts at the same time and now they're failing to cope with verifying all the documents they receive from all the foreigners affected. Despicable.

Despicable is a bit harsh......... "typically p!ss poor planning or forethought" would be my appraisal.

It sounds like a lot of people who opened Bangkok Bank accts while on tourist visas, visa-exempt, or using agents, never went back to the bank to update their info once they had their Non-O visas and yearly extensions. The bank should have called or sent notices to those affected before freezing the accts.

Why is it only Bangkok Bank we're hearing about? Did Kasikorn, SCB & Krungsri have a policy against opening accts for people on tourist visas or those using agents? Just asking why we're not hearing complaints about the other banks. It sounds like BBL was the only bank doing it, and now they are trying to sort that out and make it right.

My ATM card is locked too. My funds are unaccessible which was confirmed by the bank clerks.

That is outrageous. They could destroy someone's life with their incompetence. I am going to need to check that both my accounts are now local to me. I originally opened my account in Bangkok and I don't live there. God forbid they freeze my accounts over nonsense.

Did you open your accts while on tourist visa or visa-exempt or with agent assistance? If so, you may want to go update your info before they freeze your acct.

Cross my fingers I had not been contacted. More than 10 years old accounts (two).

Just yesterday I registered my new passport.

What a monstrous procedure.

About 45 minutes, a dozen or more signatures on a dozen papers. Clerk running around, vanished seemingly endless. New bankbooks.

Second female clerk had to approve. Feels like the 60's.

Kasikorn 10 minutes, no paper no signatures.

Just opened a savings account with ATM and app at SCB big C Pattaya and can report it was a painless experience.Only required passport COR and AIS bill.Staff pleasant and efficient.Getting the COR at immigration was far more difficult as had to file a new tm30 and come back 4 hours later to pick up.

If I remember correctly, there was a scandal involving a branch of that bank that was so accommodating in opening accounts: I also believe, but forgive me if I'm wrong, that some of that bank's staff were arrested.

It is not only BBL that became more strict. WIth the new rules enforced now, i had to go 2 times already in one week to the SCB Branch to unfreeze, first time my banking APP on the phone and second time my ATM card and APP.

First time, the APP freeze seem to have happened after receiving my new ATM card and just trying to unlock it by the app. Went to SCB branch where my account is from. The staff spend 20 minutes calling with whoever on the 02-777 7777 line to unlock my account and possibly check it with my Dtac number that is linked to it, and must be on the bank account holders name.

2nd time this morning after taking off 100,000 TBH to pay montly mortgage which is as UOB, as they give better, easier loans to foreigners then any other bank. Had to increase my limit from the 20 K to which my new ATM card was set, to 100 K to do that. Then after completing the withdrawals for 100 K at the ATM of the SCB branch where i have my account, i received an sms that my ATM card was blocked for suspecious withdrawals.  Also my SCB app on the phone got blocked at the same time. Then had to go back to the bank again after opening hours, with bank book and passport to unlock everything. Even after it was the SCB branch staff calling, the still need to speak to me and double checked with more questions to confirm my indentity. After checking with the app once unlocked, there were only the atm withdrawals from the morning. ( i have been doing the same monthly withdrawal at this amount for some years now btw)

An update. It is day 11 of my account being frozen, day 9 since I traveled 1000 km to Pattaya and supplied them with all requested documents. Planned to talk to my branch on the phone today - no luck. Nobody answers the calls (on the same phone numbers that I contacted them 10 days ago). What a great service this Bangkok Bank offers to its customers!

I hope they unlock it for you soon. There is or used to be a guy on this forum that worked for Bangkok Bank and would help users out occasionally. He was a foreigner, not Thai, I wonder if he is still around but I'm guessing he would be too overwhelmed or not have the power to help.

Nevermind, looks like @ianguygil hasn't visited the forum in a year, too bad.

He was treated quite badly by some members here and announced that he will quit the forum. I don't blame him, and I can only imagine what he'd have to endure here now with this mess. Very helpful guy back in the day.

It sounds like you had problems with your phone App and ATM card only. Were you still able to withdraw cash at the counter using your passport & bank book if you wanted?

I just remembered, a few months ago, I got a notification on my Bangkok Bank app that they wanted me to update my KYC info through the app. If you select the icon at the top right. you will see it, Personal Information (KYC). It had questions like are you employed, retired, do you trade crypto with your account etc.. and I answered them all and that was that.

I wonder if people who ignored or missed or didn't get this notification are the people whose accounts were frozen.

Did not try that, but i suppose that would have been ok. I had to get by passport and bankbook to unlock both both as i  got tired calling 02-777 7777, which only had a long message on repeat. (after pressing english language, they had a repeating message  that you have to get to the bank and that using any app on the phone required a telephone number that was linked to the account.

They absolutely do not care. I’m surprised there hasn’t been any violence over this. But there will be consequences.

Not trying to assume that you don’t have serious money kicking around, but for someone who does, would you put it in a Thai bank after all this? I’ve only got 5,000 baht in my account and I’m worried it’s too much.

Would anyone in their right mind transfer over a million dollars? Or even be comfortable leaving the 800k for a retirement visa, in the bank like is required?

This is going to be an expensive problem for Thailand.

I moved to Thailand 21 years ago, and have spent about 12 of those years living here full time.

I’m not retired, but these days I stay part time living here and the rest of the time in other countries.

Other countries can be pretty screwed up too, but Thailand is becoming more nationalist and xenophobic every year. It gets harder and harder to stay here full time. So I just don’t.

Correct.

But in defense of Thailand, Thais have scarcely more rights than we do. A few more. But it’s just not a nation or system that respects human rights.
