Meanwhile my Thai niece is in Lamphun jail for allowing her bkb account to be used as a mule account. Account still working.

We foreigners are punished for Thai crimes!

  • This is why people use an agent. No money that can be confiscated.

  • You can't catch a break can you? First jail. Now this?   What did you do in your previous life?

  • Who's fault is that? If you are living 1400k from you bank, it is time to open a local account.

Just to sum up where we are on this, Hellfire, can you confirm that what has happened is that your bank has frozen your account because they thought you had opened it wiith a tourist visa, and now wanted you to confirm that you have a long term visa. Is that correct? Have you sorted this out now?

Our accounts are frozen for no reason.

Their accounts unfrozen even after they commit the crime.

(She's out now, said she didn't do it, back in BK where she was arrested Friday)

Any western people letting their accounts be used .......... NONE.

Yes - and also, Hellfire, can you confirm whether you offered to send an electronic copy (of current Long Term Visa with passport info, visa stamp, and permission to stay stamp) as an interim measure until you could show up in person?

Assuming she is innocent, glad to read she is out.

Maybe the 'mule' accounts are left open on a temporary basis so to help the authorities track the perpetrators down better?

What a load of nonsense.

I don’t think it’s nonsense—perhaps just a bit too emotional. But just look at the recent news threads on this forum:

Crackdowns on Pattaya nightlife venues

Crackdowns on cannabis shops (mainly in tourist areas)

Foreigners bank accounts being closed

Visa rules changing almost weekly over the last decade

Constant scrutiny of foreign property ownership

Foreigners being attacked by Thai mobs, often without any visible consequences for the attackers.

And more and more and more…

The fact that many of us have grown used to this doesn’t mean it’s normal. Xenophobia is clearly on the rise in Thailand, and it can be seen at every level of society—from motorbike taxi drivers to government ministers.

Perhaps the bank is right on this instance, you seem to have issues.

So this is how banks are supposed to operate, in your opinion? Closing accounts of people “with issues”—such as posting negative comments on an expat forum?

Crackdowns on Pattaya nightlife venues

- many not operating with proper licenses or breaking rules concerning opening times.
What has that to do with not liking foreigners?

Crackdowns on cannabis shops (mainly in tourist areas)

- The law changed, new rules and many not having a proper license

What has that to do with not liking foreigners?

Visa rules changing almost weekly over the last decade

- not true

Constant scrutiny of foreign property ownership

- many use illegal constructs to own property, fake nominees, fake companies

Foreigners being attacked by Thai mobs, often without any visible consequences for the attackers.

- True, but many tourists behave like complete idiots nowadays too and are not shy of mob attacks themselves.

Very much doubt that. worse than that, ever heard of Western operated boiler rooms?

Thats what many banks have done to far right social media influencers. Bitcoin doesnt distinguish between peoples beliefs or anything so its the superior way of saving, in my opinion

This is not just a Hellfire issue, this is a nation-wide crackdown by banks, caused by foreigner's fraudulent operation of Thai bank accounts, not Western foreigners, but Chinese foreigners.

Just saw it in the news, it's a nation-wide crackdown to minimize fraud.

How is your Thai language skill living here in Thailand?

He is talking about a bank in Pattaya, where the local language is Pidgin English, not Thai.

I know what he is talking about, that's why I suggested that he called the bank's call centre if he cannot communicate effectively in the language of the country in which he chose to live.  The "local language" in Pattaya is only pidgin English for the benefit of ignorant, non Thai-speaking expats.

Wouldn't it be great if somebody with clout (newspaper, legal firm, embassy) championed on behalf of all people here on a Retirement visa and banking with Bangkok Bank, and got the Bangkok Bank to explain what it is doing and challenge the bank's legal right to be freezing retirees Bank accounts, and also interview the chief of immigration for their take on is this a immigration policy that BKK Bank is applying and is it necessary.

Doesn't Asean Now have a link to such a media outlet, Taiger is it called?

Don't think you need fluent Thai language skills for them to say what's wrong with your account.

Because paranoia started slowly ,🙄i am not on Bangkok bank ,

i went early this morning to withdraw at Kasikorn bank by teller (as teller always check passport and Tel. # , so all is o.k ? ).....a serious amount as i wish not this Bangkok freezing becomes contagious to other banks 😁, as to at least not having any fin. problem up to my departure date ending Sept.  getting ret.ext, or not is not a problem ,anymore.....

As i saw how easy i got my E-Visa Non O  in home country(4 working day) and send me by email , only proof of equal value in Euros at 800K thb on Home country bank for running month only needed....

I was informed by Krungthai bank last week that the maximum deposit 'over the counter 'is Bt100,000 per day, it use to be unlimited.

Also, only Bt100,000 per day CDM when it use to be Bt200,000

Thai's don't seem to take responsibility for problems (loss of face?). What that means is when the problem can no longer be ignored it has to be viewed as coming from somewhere in order to pacify the masses that something is being done to correct the problem. Is that foreigners? I hope not, but they would be an easy scapegoat.

You see "the contagion syndrome " is starting by the Banks ....😦

Mean while  competition to this tread is already here 😁

This is what I’ve been able to piece together from all my dealings with the bank. Apparently, the problem is that my account was supposedly opened while I was still on a tourist visa. (As if I had opened it myself!) Now the bank claims they need to “check” my visa status—as if the retirement stamp in my passport means nothing. And the only way for them to do this check is for me to physically go to my branch. (Another absurd requirement.)

Here’s the short version of how my account was opened back in April 2024: I used an agency to get my first retirement visa. They arranged the account opening. Later, I transferred my own money into it to meet the 800k requirement. The bank has been fully aware of my visa status ever since—I was in the branch just a month ago, and they took multiple copies of my visa pages.

So yes, maybe the account was opened against some internal bank rules. But how can I be held accountable for their mistakes? It seems the easiest way for them to “solve” any issue is simply to blame foreigners. Guilty by definition.

What?  I was referring to some AN poster disparaging Thais, in their own country, for speaking the language of another country "badly".

Need Thai for complex stuff like discussing politics or football.

How much or what's wrong, no need for any language skills at all, they can point to stuff.
