Thai tax

Featured Replies

For the last couple of years the noise on Thai tax has been quite deafening, but recently more like the sound of silence.

Scrolling google news yesterdy spotted the following statementin an article.

"There was concern earlier this year that the DTV may entrap holders into paying personal income tax if they remained here more than 180 days in a calendar year. However, the Thai finance ministry recently claimed that income transmitted to Thailand would be tax-free if sent in the same, or next, tax year in which it was earned. However, such a decision requires ratification from the Cabinet and the Council of State, whilst avoiding the need for routine parliamentary approval. The hope is that any amendment to financial regulations would be back-dated."

Its something to watch - but its old news and at present, it is likely to be considered a bit speculative.

The Thai news (in English language) post many things about taxation possibilities that do not come to pass.  As noted, it is something to watch, but don't bet the farm on it happening.

Something that has yet to happen can hardly be considered as "old news".

I am well aware of the speculation from some on this forum, but first time I have seen a pointer directly to the finance ministry.

" the Thai finance ministry recently claimed that income transmitted to Thailand would be tax-free if sent in the same, or next, tax year in which it was earned."

If you have seen "old" quotes from the finance ministry saying the same thing, please feel free to post the reference.

When it comes to fake news, nowhere worse than this forum. Back in January word was that if you hadn't done your tax return by April immigration wouldn't allow an extension.

Whether you agree or not is irrelevant,  article supports the wait and see brigade rather than doom  and gloom merchants.

There have been other posts about senior officials in the RD saying things that never came to pass.

I believe that was mostly pushed by 1 or maybe 2 rather prolific posters - who insisted it would happen.  They were adamant it would be necessary, and one even paid an agent to get them a totally unnecessary tax clearance certificate.    I think many disagreed with these users.

So i myself would not say "in January the word was" unless one happened to believe only 1 or 2 users while most other users who took the time to reply stated otherwise. The only word about tax submission proof for extensions. being stated in January, was from what many of us considered to be 'scare mongers'.   It never came to pass (as of yet).

I agree wait and see is a good approach if one (like us) has the luxury to do so.

It was rehashed recently but the first reports I believe were from May this year.  Here's a Bangkok Post article from that time and a subsequent discussion on here.

That is not quite the same  as finance ministry saying something is going to happen, which you claimed to be "old news".

That is selective memory.

Thank you for that.

Not sure if I saw that one, may have been away at the time but still fairly recent. Also that refers to the RD rather than the Finance Ministry, the higher up the food chain the better.

No. It was not.

Clearly you missed the discussions - else you would not be posting that.

Anyway, its mostly not relevant until such appears in the Royal Gazette.  Something to watch but will it happen? One can speculate about such Government wishes ad infinitum.

You are wrong.

I didn't miss the discussions, got fed up with the number of doom and gloom merchants making out they were the only ones that knew what was happening.
