Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has called on citizens and soldiers alike to vote “without fail” in the junta-organised elections set to begin this December, despite widespread scepticism over the legitimacy of the process.

During a visit to Magwe, a region known for its resistance activity, the general met with military families, business owners and local residents, urging them to “do the duty of a good citizen” by voting for candidates who prioritise national interests. His remarks come amid a nationwide campaign tour through junta-controlled areas, including Yangon, Bago and parts of Shan State.

The election, which will be held in phases due to ongoing instability, is widely viewed as an attempt to legitimise military rule following the 2021 coup that ousted the National League for Democracy (NLD). Min Aung Hlaing criticised the former civilian government for alleged foreign interference and reiterated the military’s role in safeguarding the constitution—a document drafted by the army that guarantees it 25 percent of parliamentary seats.

The junta’s election commission has announced 833 constituencies, including areas currently held by resistance forces. This move has coincided with intensified military operations in rebel-held towns, raising concerns over the feasibility and fairness of voting in conflict zones.

Despite claiming international support and promising foreign observers, the regime has yet to confirm where voting will be impossible due to security concerns. Critics argue the poll is designed to entrench military dominance under the guise of democratic transition.

As the December date approaches, Min Aung Hlaing’s campaign underscores the regime’s determination to push ahead with an election that many inside and outside Myanmar view as deeply compromised. Whether the ballot will bring stability or deepen divisions remains to be seen.
