A 26-year-old woman has died after her motorcycle was struck from behind by a speeding pickup truck driven by a man who admitted to drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

The fatal crash occurred on 22 August at traffic lights outside Tiger Park, on the Pattaya–Sattahip Road. Police and rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene.

Emergency responders found a grey Yamaha XMAX 350 motorcycle, registration from Chonburi, damaged and lying in the middle of the road. Its rider, identified as Ms Atcharaporn Vola, 26, was unconscious and critically injured. Rescue workers performed CPR before rushing her to Pattaya City Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Nearby, officers discovered a white Toyota Revo pickup, registration from Chonburi, with front-end damage. The 56-year-old driver remained at the scene and identified himself to police.

During questioning, he admitted he had been drinking alcohol prior to the crash. He was taken to Pattaya police station for a breathalyser test. Police said that if his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit, he would face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

A witness later handed over dashcam footage to investigators, showing the pickup truck travelling at high speed before abruptly changing lanes to overtake. The vehicle then ploughed into the stationary motorcycle waiting at the red light, hurling the rider to the ground.

Police confirmed an investigation is ongoing and driver will be charged.

Poor thing run over by front and back wheels, this is one reason bikers don't stop at lights, look back first

Just take him out and shoot him right now. This sh*tlode of local males in pickups shouldn't be allowed in Pattaya to begin with.  And all this bs in the world from the city about safety ???

I initially felt the same but was expecting a kid or guy in his twenties, not some 56 year old.  Not sure we can stop pickups being driven in town though, it is a major means of transportation of people and goods in town.

Of course not saying " stop pickups being driven in town" Thats just a bad strawman argument. And why ??. The sensible way here is to profile these jerks in pickups as to what they are doing here.  Of course that requires pro active policing .* And who said anything about age?

Being first and the only bike in your lane at the lights is a dangerous place to be. Especially on Sukhumvit. Seek cover from stationery cars in the adjacent lane if you can. If exposed, keep your eyes on the rearview mirrors and be prepared to gun it. :coffee1:

RIP.

I do a lot of walking, crossing roads etc and it scares the sh*t outta me sometimes! 😬

And again if the city cared about safety here. Then alot of pedestrian bridges would be built instead of all these bogus city/concrete kickback projects like paving over nice parks. As well as proactive/profiling policing

Sadly, if you were to stand by one of the pedestrian bridges along Sukhumvit, you would see as I do a multitude of pedestrians ignoring the footbridge and crossing the road directly,  I see this especially often at school zones where students can't be arsed to go up the steps and run across 4 lanes instead.  It galls me that schools don't place a guard to enforce using the pedestrian footbridge.

there goes most of the population

I am totally shocked at the amount of motorcycles/scooters without a working rear light!!!

At night, usually a dark colour bike, and the rider wearing black clothes, they are almost impossible to spot, with the scarcity of proper road lighting in Thailand.

I often try to stop next to them and tell them about it, but then they are usually stopped and stepping on the brake, so the brake light is on, and they turn around, and then give me a dirty look!

The amazing thing is that they just can not figure out that they are literally risking their lives, for lack of a 20 baht bulb!

A rear light would help the bad ghosts to follow them home!

Agreed. Thai males in pickups are a scourge.
