Uk passport renew

Featured Replies

Hi my daughter who lives in Thailand with her thai family wants to come and visit me (Dad )  in England

She has 2 passports thai and uk , her uk passport has ran out and we need to renew can I do it online with her not living with me in the uk

she is 11 years old

Mom will need to help her apply through the OK Embassy in Bangkok.

As a citizen, she can enter on an expired passport. She would need to renew to leave though.

She can exit Thailand on her Thai passport, enter UK on the expired British passport and then renew when in England.

There may be battles with airlines who may not be aware that, as a British citizen, she can enter the UK on the expired passport. They may struggle with her Thai passport not having a visa in.

I think it was @DrJack54 who reported that this is not without these risks - but it saves the faff and additional expense of renewing via VfS.

Assume the rest of her Thai family have visas already?

If new PP and visas have to be done here in Bangkok, BfS, UK global agent, has a new location is in Belle Tower behind Central Rama 9 Shopping Centre. Same drivway to parking garage.

what age is the child, use an agent,  i don't normally suggest using an agent, but for UK passport renewal it saves a lot of work and they will know what's required

When is she planning to go?

If you have time just renew the UK passport from Thailand. I did it recently for my daughter and it only took three weeks although they advised six weeks if I remember correctly. It is not done online but you have to make an appointment to submit the application in person (your wife can do it, your daughter does not need to attend in person).

You don't mention where your wife and daughter are as this will make a huge difference. Where in the country are they? If in Bangkok or Chiang Mai just do it yourself. If elsewhere maybe consider an agent.

Will she be travelling alone? I think sending her alone with an expired UK passport would be unnecessary stress even if it is technically feasible.

Give us the missing information and we can give you better advice.

She can't use her Thai passport to enter the UK.  You have tons of time, just renew the UK one before April then everything is good and no stress.

If her mum plans to visit Bangkok or Chiang Mai between now and, say, February then just apply via VFS in Bangkok or CM. If she doesn't then look to use an agency to save her from making a journey. I can't recommend any as I have never used one but I am sure someone will be able to.

No, you can't do it online. It has to be submitted in person by a parent, either in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Just go here and follow the questions:

If your ex has officially changed her daughter's name, then she will have a 'name change' certificate.

These have the previous and new names in English text.
You can use that to obtain a new UK passport in her new name.

I think it more likely they are just using her Thai name using Thai text for ease, rather than officially changing her name.

This sounds odd. I don't think you can just decide to change a name like that.

No, you cannot do a visa. You daughter is a UK citizen and a UK citizen cannot enter the UK on a foreign visa. I know this because one year I was renewing my son's UK passport and it was taking weeks (I think 11 weeks in the end) and it was getting to be very touch and go, so I thought I would just get him a UK visa on his Thai passport as a backup. I looked in to it and was told in no uncertain terms this is not possible. A UK citizen cannot legally enter the UK on a foreign passport.

You could chance it and not tell anyone and just pretend she is Thai but this is very risky, especially as you are entering with her as a UK citizen, it would definitely be flagged. I am sure you would get in eventually but it could be stressful.

***Disclaimer, I am not an expert on this, you need to talk to someone who is. I am only going by what I was told when I considered it for my son.

You have until April, plenty of time to do what you need to do, but I would say drop the idea of her entering on a Thai passport.
