In a decisive move against the illegal trade of nitrous oxide, HCM City police have initiated legal proceedings against individuals selling "laughing gas" in the bustling Bùi Viện–Bến Thành area. Several defendants have been prosecuted following a detailed investigation.

During inspections on 15th and 21st July, authorities uncovered the illegal sale of nitrous oxide at local establishments, including the popular venues 'Nameless' and 'Bosin'. Located on Bùi Viện Street, these venues were selling the gas for on-site use—a practice banned due to its adverse health effects.

At 'Nameless', police discovered shisha paraphernalia alongside metal cylinders suspected to contain nitrous oxide. In addition, 'Bosin' was found with similar cylinders, further indicating illegal activities. The setup was highly organised, with staff taking orders, delivering gas-filled balloons to customers, and managing payments through specialised software.

Despite knowing the health risks and legal implications, the suspects admitted to profiting illicitly by selling nitrous oxide. The profits were pooled, with staff members receiving commission-based incentives.

HCM City's police force identified these activities as clear signs of "trafficking in prohibited goods," leading to the legal action against the perpetrators. Since 2019, the suspects have been primary suppliers in the Bùi Viện–Bến Thành nightlife district, generating tens of billions of Vietnamese đồng—translating to several million Thai Baht.

In response, HCM City's police have issued stern warnings to businesses and individuals against the use or distribution of such banned substances. Authorities emphasised their commitment to enforcing the law to safeguard public health and well-being.

The clampdown serves as a strong reminder to comply with regulations, with officials promising continued vigilance. The protection of community rights and health remains paramount as the city addresses this pressing issue.
