No perfect outcomes

A final decision on the assets is expected in December. But even if approved, the funds may be disbursed in cautious tranches, tied to battlefield developments and political optics, locking Ukraine into the unforgiving calculus of great power rivalry between Russia and the West.

The EU is not abandoning Ukraine, but it is recalibrating its risk exposure. That recalibration is grounded in strategic doubt as EU leaders are no longer sure Ukraine can win – even if they won’t say so aloud.

In the end, whether or not the assets are deployed, Ukraine’s outlook remains bleak unless both Russia and the West find a way to de-escalate their zero-sum rivalry in the region.

Any future settlement is unlikely to be optimal and will likely disappoint Ukrainians. But the current challenge is not to pursue perfect outcomes, which no longer exist, but to choose the least damaging path to ending the war, among all the imperfect options.

Nato’s method is to take on mass attacks by the “near peer” forces of Russia. But Russia’s tactics no longer concentrate on mass – the weight of numbers in men and arms used against Ukraine three years ago.
Now, Ukrainian forces are being attacked with long-range glide bombs. Russian drones hunt out Kyiv’s UAV teams in their bunkers and force them away from their forward lines. And above all, the lines of logistics are pounded with terrifying accuracy.
As a result, small groups of two or four Russians covertly sneak into locations on the front lines to try to hold bunkers and dugouts while Ukrainian drones patrol overhead.
The soldiers use blankets designed to muffle their thermal images, sometimes held above them on poles, to get into locations where they may be embedded for weeks or months.

Agreed, NATO is not ready.

Russia is a real very serious threat and if they prevail against Ukraine, the threat to NATO will exponentially increase. So stop them before that happens.

It isn't news that there are no perfect outcomes.

Ukraine is willing to make a deal.

Putin is not.

So Ukraine must fight on.

Well, of course you could be right about Ukraine willing to make a deal. Now that they are getting spanked. Wanted to do so a while back, but hanged their minds when Boris arrived on the scene didn't they. How stupid to believe him.

Europe and the UK want the Ukrainians to fight on. Don't think The Don does. But he has to do what he is told.

Again, yes he was very successful both as an entertainer and entertainment business entrepreneur. I get that you hate him for some reason but that doesn't change those facts.

I like Orban, he got balls of steel. Actually it's an apt comparision to Banderstate because:

- alcoholic usually have problem to admit he failed and blame others for everything

- claims he's not intoxicated while heavily under influence

- always trying to rationalize his addiction and looking for excuses

- doing stupid things and then complain he have to face consequences

- there's no amount of alcohol that alcoholic considers as "enough"

- disurbed perception of reality

- his erratic behaviour affects others around

- usually low moral fiber

- even if he throw up (corruption scandal) he's ready to drink another shot immediately (Volodymyr "gimme more money" Zelensky)

- he likes to share alcohol with his best friends (also alcoholics)

- when run out of money starts to beg/borrow from others

- don't mind to loose everything to feed his addiction

- prone to be violent, sneaky or even dangerous

- annoying for sober people

Banderstate at its best.

A dog that has barked ( unlike Trump according to Einstein).

Europe must take a more aggressive approach to Russia, particularly on the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine, says US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

According to Whitaker, the confiscation of Russian assets in favor of Ukraine could be a “significant step” in strengthening Ukraine's economic and military financing for “several years.”

'' But I think it would also point to a new step — a more aggressive Europe. The time for them to act boldly is now,” the ambassador said.

Commenting on President Donald Trump's remarks calling Russia a “paper tiger,” Whitaker said that the Russian army is not "necessarily that strong." But Europe must be prepared because the Kremlin is “reckless — they’re unpredictable and they may make a move on NATO territory.”

Moscow is being targeted almost daily by Ukrainian drones striking energy facilities, while Ukrainian operatives have assassinated a number of high-profile Russian military figures deep inside the country. These deep-strike Ukrainian attacks have forced Moscow to confront vulnerabilities it once assumed lay far from the battlefield.

To shore up the protection of critical infrastructure, the Russian president earlier this month quietly signed a decree authorising the deployment of reservists to guard key sites, including refineries hit repeatedly by Ukrainian drones and contributing to a rise in domestic fuel prices.

The measure allows the Kremlin to call up a pool of about 2 million people, according to lawmakers, to guard energy facilities without declaring a fresh mobilisation – a step that has proved deeply unpopular. These reservists undergo annual military training and receive a modest monthly payment for remaining in the active reserve, but have so far been spared from fighting in Ukraine unless they volunteered.

Moscow passes laws to boost defences against Ukrainian strikes

Russian authorities had already deployed a dense network of air defence systems around Putin’s secluded Valdai residence, as well as around the elite Rublyovka neighbourhood where many of the political elites live. But it has struggled to adequately defend the hundreds of oil refineries dotted across the country, and other industrial plants tied to the war effort.
