Southern insurgents are believed to be behind a brutal attack on a mining site in Narathiwat’s Chanae district on 26 August, which left two workers injured, one of them critically.

Police said the incident occurred around 11.30 at a mine in Moo 3, Ban Aisure, Chang Phueak subdistrict. Officers and an army explosives disposal team rushed to the scene after receiving reports of an explosion.

Two men were found injured by shrapnel. One victim, identified as Mr Sabri Tayeh, lost his right leg after stepping on an improvised explosive device. Both were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Investigators discovered that the device was a makeshift bomb fashioned from a small gas cylinder buried in the ground. More explosives were later uncovered in the vicinity, prompting a clearance operation.

Police revealed that the attack was linked to an earlier arson incident at the same site. On 21 August, unidentified assailants torched a soil-hauling lorry at the mine. Today, Mr Sabri and a colleague had returned with a backhoe to clear the area when they triggered the device planted by the perpetrators.

Authorities suspect the bombing was intended to target security forces who regularly inspect such crime scenes. The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents blamed on insurgent groups operating in three southernmost provinces.

The area remains sealed off as bomb disposal teams work to ensure no further devices remain.
