A young woman was killed and her boyfriend left critically injured after his pick-up truck skidded off a rain-soaked road and ploughed into a utility pole in Udon Thani.

The crash occurred on the Sam Phrao–Don Kloy Road, near Ban Nong Bu in Sam Phrao subdistrict. Emergency services, including police investigators, doctors from Udon Thani Central Hospital, local rescue units and foundation volunteers, rushed to the scene following reports of the accident.

Officers found a white Isuzu D-Max, registration from Khon Kaen, crushed against a streetlight pole and an electricity post, both of which were damaged.

The driver, identified as 29-year-old Mr Athip was pulled from the wreckage with serious injuries and rushed to Udon Thani Central Hospital. His passenger, 22-year-old Ms Chadaporn, was found dead in the front seat with a broken neck. Her body was later taken to the hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police said the couple, both employees at a textile transport company in central Udon Thani, were returning home after work when heavy rain made the road slippery. Entering a curve at speed, the vehicle lost traction, the driver lost control and careered into the pole, causing the fatal collision.

Investigators confirmed that further enquiries would be made and legal proceedings carried out in line with standard procedure.

No seat belts?

You can bet.

The damage doesn't look like the two had to die if buckled up?

I could be wrong but is that inflated airbags?

Anyway #1: heavy rain, high speed and curve don't mix well.

Airbags augment other restraints such as seatbelts so the passenger's broken neck suggests an airbag impact while not wearing a seatbelt.
