Police in Chachoengsao have arrested a Myanmar man after he allegedly stole a motorbike and attempted to break into three ATMs in the dead of night, claiming his actions were fuelled by alcohol and a desire to spite his wife.

Police Chief Pol. Maj. Gen. Kriangkrai Boonsorn, along with senior officers including Pol. Col. Somchai Yusawat and Pol. Col. Kittisan Chanah, held a press briefing detailing the arrest of Mr Tae Maung, a Myanmar national, at Suwinthawong Market in Chachoengsao. Mr Maung reportedly has been involved in multiple theft-related cases across the region.

According to Pol. Col. Phuritat Boonchuay, Mr Maung had previously worked in a factory in Samut Sakhon for over a decade before moving in with his wife in Soi Permsin 37, Sai Mai, Bangkok. Known to be a heavy drinker, he was reportedly kicked out of his home by his wife on the day of the incident. In an apparent act of spite, he stole a motorbike belonging to Mr Eksit, left parked with the keys inside and rode to Chachoengsao.

Upon arrival, he attempted to break into three ATMs but failed to retrieve any money. He then rode the stolen motorbike to a friend’s rental room at Pong Phon Market, not far from the crime scene, where he stayed until police tracked him down using CCTV footage. He was arrested at approximately 14:30 on 1 September and taken to Chachoengsao Police Station.

During a search, authorities discovered an expired pink work permit card, leading to additional charges of illegal stay in Thailand. Mr Maung now faces charges of attempted theft at night, causing damage to protective barriers and using a vehicle to facilitate criminal activity.
