Wild Bull Attack Leaves Thai Man Severely Injured in Kui Buri

In a shocking incident in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a Thai man was seriously injured after being attacked by a wild bull in a local pineapple plantation. The incident occurred on September 2, when 64-year-old Somsak, a caretaker in the plantation, was gored by the bull.

Local community leader Arunchai Sommit swiftly contacted the Luang Phor Nai Kuti Wat Kui Buri Rescue Foundation to assist with emergency transportation. As Somsak's condition was critical, locals initially moved him using a pickup truck, meeting the rescue van en route to expedite his journey to the hospital. There, he received immediate first aid before being transported for further treatment.

The attack left Somsak with a severe 10-centimetre wound on his chest, inflicted by the bull’s horn, which also tore his lung. Due to the gravity of his injuries, Somsak was transferred from Kui Buri Hospital to the larger Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital, underlining the seriousness of his condition.

Somporn, a local resident who helped at the scene, recounted how a colleague of Somsak’s alerted her and her husband as they were about to leave for their own plantation. She quickly contacted Arunchai, who arranged for emergency services. By the time Somporn reached Somsak, he was on the ground, bleeding heavily, while the bull had vanished.

This situation highlights ongoing issues faced by the community, with wild animals frequently causing disruption in agricultural areas. Many locals resort to staying overnight in their fields or hire guards to protect their crops. Somporn expressed a strong hope that relevant authorities would address the persistent animal invasions.

Adding to the challenges is the area’s poor mobile phone reception, which hampers quick responses in emergencies. The community is urging local government officials to improve infrastructure, ensuring residents can summon help swiftly in critical situations.

As of now, there is no update on Somsak's current health status. The incident not only underscores the immediate dangers posed by wildlife in agricultural zones but also the urgent need for improved safety and communication measures in rural communities.

This incident reflects broader concerns over human-wildlife conflict in Thailand, particularly in regions where agricultural and natural habitats intersect. Tackling these issues requires concerted action from both government agencies and local communities to ensure safety and sustainable coexistence.

Observing the situation, there's a clear call for enhanced protective measures and emergency protocols to better safeguard those working in remote areas. Moreover, this incident could serve as a catalyst for change, prompting authorities to prioritise network improvements, thereby mitigating risk in similar future emergencies. The affected community remains hopeful that the spotlight on Somsak’s plight will accelerate these necessary developments.

Gored by a Gaur. Horrendous injury and I hope Somsak pulls through. Must have been traumatic. I beleive the Gaurs are quite rare. Maybe a case of foraging for food.
