No one on Australia would understand if you used the word janitor.....it's now called Presentation services officer and I'm proud to wear my uniform as a professional Presentation services officer with pride !!!

I'm rather fond of Sanitation Engineer. I've swabbed many decks in my lifetime.

In western countries, and even Norway who is considered to be a high cost country you find gyms starts at less than 1000,- baht a month and up to 2 000 +++ depending on flexible membership and included all facilities and services.

Thailand for a decent gym you pay 2k and up

I pay 1200 month. One year membership 14,000baht. A/C, steam, sauna, lap pool. Not large but adequate.

That is nice and a decent price especially considering a lap pool included.

A lot of people here need the a/c for anything and everything. They are not fresh air people.

There isn't much fresh air around this town.

An Israeli guy who was working out when I was there kept muttering about "the camps".  At first I thought he was being edgy but I felt rather light headed on the ride home.

why and how much does your gym charge ?

My favourite gym is Elite gym

B383 month, newish gym, Bangna. Expensive? Don't think so.

Jill's are far more expensive....anyway, why waste time at a gym...get out and walk.

That's your prerogative sweetheart,we don't need to know

Where I stay I pay 1500 Baht a month for a quite well equipped studio. I find that quite reasonable and close to what I pay back in Europe.

Bit touchy aren't you darling!

You made a point about gyms being expensive which i disagreed with by giving you the facts.

Its a Big White Budda about 20 km from Pak Chong, direction Saraburi. Nakhon Ratchasima. Do not remember the name of the Budda. I also know there is another Budda Temple in Lop Buri with 3790 stairs!! I will go there one day and try that.....but not before I can take the 750 at least 3 or 4 times up and down! Now I do 2 times easy😄.

Rocky!!!

Gyms in Pattaya are definitely overpriced, especially for the day pass.

Here in Vietnam (outside of Saigon, where they are also expensive) it's a lot cheaper.

Gym? what is it? some kind of Thai food or the name of a girly bar?

Building your own gym at home is a possibility, if you want to do this for a long time.

I have built a gym all included 300k aboutish and it will take a few years to get those money back, but there where no options in my area, and also beginning of covid, so easy money spent and no regrets. That’s my man cave. Still I would be happy to go to any decent gym and pay 2k a month for see people and be able to socialize a bit while exercising.

300kg freeweights and bars

dumbells and kettle bells up to 35kg

cable cross

pull down, bench and squat machine

leg press and hack squat machine

rowing machine

Ski-erg

Treadmill

I always manage to socialize with a few if I go to the same gym at same time 4-5 days a week. It doesn't happen over night, so be patient

To answer your question:

Gyms are expensive because decent gym equipment is expensive. Wear and tear and repairs to such equipment is also expensive. Staff costs are expensive. Costs to maintain the premises are high. Electricity, water, etc.

As others have said - there is free equipment to use in some parks - but if you want decent, well maintained facilities- you should expect to pay a reasonable fee for it.

simple really….

Then again you don't have to suffer all the poseurs who play on their phones without doing any exercise, or all that grunting and groaning by people lifting a little weight.

Sounds like you have good experience with public gyms.
