Prunes are good for you

Featured Replies

Supports Digestive Health

High in fiber: Prunes are rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, which help promote regular bowel movements and prevent constipation.

Natural laxative: They contain sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol with mild laxative effects.

Prevent bone loss

Prunes may help prevent bone loss, especially in postmenopausal women.

Rich in vitamin K, boron, and potassium, which are essential for bone strength.

Some studies suggest eating 5–6 prunes a day may help maintain bone density.

Good for Heart Health

Potassium-rich: Helps regulate blood pressure.

Contains antioxidants (like polyphenols) that reduce inflammation and may improve cholesterol levels.

May help reduce LDL ("bad") cholesterol and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Blood Sugar Control

Despite their sweetness, prunes have a low glycemic index due to their fiber content.

Can help stabilize blood sugar levels when eaten in moderation.

May Support Brain Health

Antioxidants in prunes may help protect against oxidative stress, which is linked to cognitive decline.

Nutrient-Dense

Prunes are a good source of:

Vitamin K,  Vitamin A,   Potassium,  Iron,   B vitamins (especially B6)

May Help with Weight Management

The fiber and sorbitol help increase satiety, which may reduce overall calorie intake.

They can be a satisfying snack alternative to processed sweets.

Potential Side Effects (if over-consumed)

Gas or bloating due to sorbitol.

Laxative effect if you eat too many (especially >10–12 prunes/day).

Caloric content: Prunes are nutrient-dense but also high in natural sugars.

Recommended Intake:

4–6 prunes per day is generally a healthy and effective amount for most people.

Prunes and Birds custard was my favourite dessert at Mums home.

For constipation, Dried Apricots work very well.   As I found out, without prior knowledge of :coffee1:

Eat boxes of it as well as dates apples and nuts. Has zero effect, still have to use ennemas or laxatives
