The study is preliminary and published as a preprint, and it hasn’t yet undergone peer review, plus the researchers have re-emphasize that COVID vaccines remain highly effective at preventing severe illness and death.

 

Too early to get the tissues out.

The copyright holder for this preprint (which was not certified by peer review) is the author/funder, who has granted medRxiv a license to display the preprint in perpetuity.

 

So not peer-reviewed.  That's not a good sign.

 

What did the study "prove"?  Nothing much.

 

The study did not address the source of the spike proteins found in some PVS sufferers. Iwasaki told Reuters in an email that her team is currently looking to see if the proteins derive from the vaccine or possibly from a prior infection with the virus.

 

The current study notes, however, that of the 42 PVS patients, 27 had a history of COVID and all but two of these had PVS symptoms before their infection.

This has been an ongoing issue with these researchers at Yale, who are a credible bunch.... But, what they've mainly been doing is documenting the goings on of people (including folks recruited from anti-vax groups, a couple of whose leaders are listed as co-authors of the study) who claim they're suffering from vaccine-related side effects.

 

But in general, at least, their prior reports and studies haven't documented much / any of a proven causal connections between the subjects conditions and their having received COVID vaccinations. As scientists say, correlation is NOT causation.  Yes they got vaccinated and yes they have symptoms, but why?

It does seem you can get Long Covid spike protein from the in jection but also if you got Covid 

from another source.

Yes, you are exposed to the COVID-19 spike protein even without vaccination, because the virus itself produces spike proteins when it infects a cell. In an infected individual, the virus uses the cell's machinery to make copies of its own components, including the spike protein, which are then assembled into new viral particles and released to infect other cells. Therefore, the spike protein is a natural part of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, both before and during infection.

I wouldn't go that far, but the preprint does comment in its ending summary:

 

"We observed that the general health status of the PVS participants was far below the general US population average based on the GHVAS scores. The patient-reported outcome scores from the PROMIS29 domains were also indicative of lower quality of life."

 

If I remember correctly from prior versions of these Yale researchers reports, their core group of study participants were people who reported a WIDE range of pre-existing health issues and conditions at the outset.

 

And the authors also wrote:

 

"...this study is early-stage and requires replication and validation. We emphasize the critical task of discerning between meaningful results and random fluctuations in the data. Future work is essential to elucidate these relationships."

The Yale researchers also point out that it might not just be the spike protein causing trouble. Components of the vaccines themselves — like the mRNA, the lipid nanoparticles (fat globules that deliver the mRNA), or adenoviral vectors used in other shots — can trigger strong immune reactions in some people, possibly leading to long-term symptoms.
