Cutoff time for SWIFT transfers

Featured Replies

What's the cutoff time (I read noon, 14:00, 16:00) for international transfers to be credited to a thai bank account? Does it vary from bank to bank, or is it the same for all? Thanks

I assume you are referring to the time the SWIFT transfer is initiated.

Does it really matter, as it takes three or four days anyway.

Does a SWIFT arrive at say Bangkok Bank, or any Thai bank, coded as an International Transfer as required by Immigration for Extension purposes?

I mean, what are the hours within which the money can be credited to your account: from 9:00 AM to noon, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM? I tried calling the bank, but no one answers...always on hold.

I generally get my swift transfers the next day, 2 at the most.  Swift transfers are always coded as international.

It varies as banks post during the business day.

For me, over 50-ish SWIFT First-Party wire transfers, from the U.S. to BBL/THL initiated at ~ 19:00 BKK time, funds have cleared between 09:00 - 13:30 the following (business) day. If there are holidays/weekends funds clear on the next open business day.

Can we ask why this is important?

Recently I've been receiving credits into my account as late as 7pm in the evening at Kasikorn.

Which is odd as they always used to arrive at either 8 or 9am or around 4 to 5 pm - this 7 to 8pm thing is new - so something changed and recently.

Sometimes I get a same day transfer bot more of then than not it's next day or 2 days, then it can hit the account at any time - I suspect this is the sending bank introducing the delay here - I have had transfers sent for compliance checks which is nonsense, it's SWIFT in and SWIFT out in my bank - always has been.

I receive my transfers from 10 to 11am from KK Bank.

If it's a larger transfer I think they do not credit the account until they call and confirm the rate and sometimes what it's for. This can cause delays.

A naive question, I have never used swift, only wise. How do they compare fee and exchange rate wise?

Smaller transfers, wise is cheaper (lower fee)

Larger transfers > than about US$12K, swift was cheaper, last time I checked. (better rate)

I call Fidelity in the USA (provides bank cash account) after 8:30 pm Bangkok timeOn a week day.. Money arrives next morning in my Bangkok Bank account. Note: weekends and holidays in either country delays this. I had used Wise previously. No outgoing bank charge, the usual 200 baht charge from BKK Bank. Exchange rates differed but in the end it has worked out to be about the same for me.

They do call if it's over about 2 million Baht I believe and ask for 'reason for transfer' - but they don't wait around - I've had them wake me at 9am when doing such a transfer less than 24 hours before.

I deliberately did one for more than 2 million Baht last year just to test what would happen - got the phone call. Apparently they simply enter the reason into the computer - also they wanted to make sure I accepted the exchange rate - not sure what happens if you don't accept the exchange rate but it seemed about right and I was still half asleep.....

Maybe they're arriving early, 7om the previous evening as opposed to 8am the usual morning.

In more than 10 years I never once had an evening notification until about 2 months ago.

So something changed, no idea what. Normally if it wasn't credited by about 4 or 5pm then it was a next day thing, maybe they're waiting for the exchange rate to be more advantageous - for the bank.

Last month I initiated the process around 12 Thailand time, money was in account here after about 1 hour

Depends on the source currency.  If USD then it's as Yellowtail says, although the $12K figure is a bit elastic depending on home and/or intermediary bank charges.

Any other currency I've looked at then Wise wins as far as I can tell.

Every entity has to make money doing transfers, and every time currency is converted.

The only real way to know, is to run the numbers,

When I did it, I compared the difference between the rates, and used a spreadsheet to see where the breakeven point was to cover my US$45 fee.

If you use swift, you should transfer in whatever your home country currency is, and have the Thai bank do the conversion. If you let the home bank do the conversion, the rate will be terrible. My US bank will do swift transfers "free" if they do the conversion. Do not fall for it.

You will not get a proper answer to that question, too many variables.

A lot depends on the route from the remitting bank to the BOT and then once received in Thailand it will be distributed to the head office of the Thai bank concerned. From head office to branch account can be variable depending on weekends, holidays etc. Thailand uses an 8 character Swift code for retail banking which unlike an 11 character code does not include the branch code.

I usually do mine on a Tue before 9am in the UK and usually credited to my Thai account about 11am local time the next day. I found that if done on Wed/Thurs credited a bit later at around 5pm following day. I don't do it on a Mon or Fri.

The fee would depend on the remitting bank. I use HSBC in the UK and the fee is £5 but I believe many other banks are higher.

I have compared regularly and found very little in it, due to the time difference very difficult to say exactly.

Personally there would have to be significant difference to even think about using Wise.  SWIFT is an established banking protocol whereas Wise uses a peer to peer arrangement which can be very much quicker but could be vulnerable to regulation changes.

Many of us have free SWIFT transfers, send USD, get the T/T rate at Bangkok Bank, in-bound fee: 0.25% of the transfer amount (Baht 200 Min., Baht 500 Max.). Usually equivalent, or a few hundred baht less, than WISE, ~ $2,500 USD sent.

That's not free.

Zero charge for initiating a SWIFT order, that's free. Many banks charge a fee for this service.

You said you paid a $45 fee, right?

No, not for initiating the order.

I read it as free too unless you let them do the conversion, which you obviously don't want.  Can you clarify?

My bank (Chase) charges for me $45 when they complete the transaction. It costs nothing for me to initiate it.

I used to get free swift transfers when my bank was Washinton Mutual, but they went broke and Chase took them over, Lost my free safe-deposit box and free checks at the same time.
