Port Arthur and Dunblane were two massacres that forced the authorities to drastically tighten up on gun ownership with a consequent large drop in deaths by firearms. 

But the US can't seem to grasp this lesson.

There wasn't a large drop in deaths by firearms in Australia actually just after Austrlia tightened the rules. That happened much later, so it was due to factors other than the amended firearms laws.
