The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) has monitored and screened nearly one million fake online messages through its Anti-Fake News Centre between September 5 and September 11. Of these, 807 fake messages required verification, stirring concerns over various issues. The assessment primarily involved social listening, which accounted for 785 of the tip-offs, with the remaining reports coming through platforms like Line and Facebook.

The most prevalent fake news involved topics such as security issues between Thailand and Cambodia, government services, and disasters. Health products and natural disaster misinformation also generated significant concern, potentially leading to misunderstanding and anxiety. Wetang Phuangsup, DES spokesman, highlighted the significant role these fake stories play in causing panic or loss of property and personal information.

DES categorizes fake news into five primary groups: state policies and security (121 items), health and illegal products (25), disasters (14), economy (4), and online crime (52). Notable stories included claims about changes to civil servants' drug benefits and false reports of Thailand firing at the Preah Vihear Temple during border disputes. Another false claim suggested the approval of a fence along the border markers 50 and 51. Additionally, misinformation circulated about the Ministry of Culture transferring rights for traditional Thai costumes to Cambodia.

Key Takeaways

  • Nearly one million fake news messages were monitored by DES.
  • Security, health, and disaster-related stories were most prevalent.
  • The anti-fake news effort aims to prevent misunderstanding and panic.
