Call to Protect Thai Industries from Cheap Chinese Imports

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has urged the incoming industry minister to focus on shielding local industries from a surge of low-cost Chinese imports. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, poised to become the new minister following Anutin Charnvirakul's appointment as Prime Minister, is currently the top contender. The FTI, led by Kriengkrai Thiennukul, emphasizes the need for continued efforts against imports that fail to meet international environmental standards.

This concern stems from long-standing apprehension amongst Thai businesses over the increasing influx of Chinese products, which the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) forecasts will escalate by 2025. The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), in collaboration with the Customs Department, already inspects 143 product categories to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards. The JSCCIB has recommended further action, suggesting the use of existing anti-dumping and safeguard laws to bolster these efforts.

Kriengkrai Thiennukul stated that the FTI plans to present several proposals to the new industry minister, focusing on modernizing industries through green technologies and digital transformation. Support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is also essential, as they currently face financial challenges and require better access to funding. The FTI also urges the government to eliminate outdated regulations to streamline business processes.

Moving forward, the incoming minister is expected to address these issues and develop strategies that balance import regulation with promoting local industry modernization. The FTI’s stance aligns with broader economic goals, aiming to ensure that local businesses remain competitive in a changing market landscape.
